Californians, are you pissed?

I saw on the news last night that the state of California will split the estimated 2 million dollars that it will cost to throw a laker celebration parade with the team. So a state that has no money, can't give people their state tax refunds and is cutting teachers, insurance for kids and many other things have an extra million laying around to celebrate the Lakers?

SilentKnight 06-15-2009 11:02 PM

Unbelievable gall. :disgust

I may be wrong, but LA being in the playoffs/finals and winning it probably made the city a shitload of money, which in turn probably made the state a shitload of money. So perhaps using a bit of that to celebrate it may not be that bad. Yea though, not a time to spend needlessly, when the state is supposedly on the verge of bankruptcy.

Horny Dude 06-15-2009 11:09 PM

Yeah I'm pissed. We have no money, the state is cutting things all over the place, but we have to throw a parade. It's stupid, but then again that's the government for you.

2012 06-15-2009 11:10 PM

I'm in an ever growing state of apathy

WTF!!!! Did you see that riot after the game. I bet the team cost the city more money than it has ever made during the playoffs. Who do you think is paying for the clean up and repairs, the good ole taxpayers that's who!

I'm sure they made money off the team being in the finals, but like someone else posted I bet they spent a bunch of that already with the riots and stuff afterwards.

I just know if I lived there and they still owed me a state tax refund I would be pissed if they threw a parade before paying me.

KillerK 06-15-2009 11:34 PM

californians have too much money anyway, they dont need their refunds.

Mr. Billy 06-15-2009 11:38 PM

Yeah, it's the city of LA splitting the tab with the team. The state is not involved.
I guess that the team probably generated alot more revenue than that for the city, so it may not be such a bad idea.

2012 06-15-2009 11:40 PM

you now what, fuck that. who needs winners ...

Ah, I didn't know it was the city. The news broadcast I saw said, "Cash strapped California..." But then again it was a local newscast so they might not really know all the facts.

Last I checked Lakers and city were splitting the tab, and secondly... Way I look at it is its the cost of doing business... I am sure city is making millions in tax revenue from them... I don't feel bad at all. All the govt wants to do is take kill the cows that feed it...

Throw the parade!

MovieMaster 06-16-2009 12:08 AM

btw ever notice which states are broke.... All the ones with democratically run state legislatures...

Can't blame you for thinking that. The city is probably coming out ahead on the deal on the long run by having the team.

Rique 06-16-2009 02:48 AM

Considering I'll be at the parade, I say what the heck, just splurge. Not like we have a parade yearly (although one can get used to that lol).

mOrrI 06-16-2009 02:51 AM

Seems it's the same shit everywhere....

I was there right in the middle of it.....It was nuts.....They barely showed anything on TV.... It was one of the craziest things i've ever experienced....

The crowds went from real friendly to violent really quick..

smutnut 06-16-2009 04:03 AM

Are you sure you're not just still upset over the Trail Blazers?

STAROTICA 06-16-2009 05:28 AM

I will staple you with my new stapler I got from staples at the staples center.....:helpme

pornguy 06-16-2009 05:37 AM

tranza 06-16-2009 07:13 AM

Oh, whatever... hehehehe

justinsain 06-16-2009 07:37 AM

A lot of money changed hands here in Orlando as a result of them being in the playoffs. The city granted the downtown bars the right to stay open an extra hour and many said the extra income was a HUGE boost for business which saved many from closing down facing a slow summer. Sports outlets raked in the cash selling merchandise. While the Magic lost the city won.

Orlando is now building a new arena with hopes of revitalizing the downtown sector much like the Staples Center did for LA. I'm sure the Lakers being in the playoffs was a big boost for them as well.

I'd say that LA came out ahead so why not give a little back and show some appreciation for the Laker organization and give the people in LA something to celebrate and be happy about.

Of course when the people of LA show their appreciation by rioting and vandalism I say fuck'm :winkwink:

bronco67 06-16-2009 07:37 AM

They should spend the money on the parade. People are bitching about a million dollars, but that's chump change compared to what a big state can spend in seconds on regular every-day dumbass shit. Might as well waste the money on something cool.

Slutboat 06-16-2009 08:30 AM

you don't have to be a laker fan to realize what an idiotic thread this is, one Laker game pumps more money into the local economy than what is being spent here

dyna mo 06-16-2009 08:35 AM

umm, wrong. no tax dollars are going to pay for the parade.

The Lakers should of let it go to game seven so the city could make more money ;)

F-U-Jimmy 06-16-2009 08:39 AM

Its no problem they are just about to sell the Del Mar race track, everything will be ok then :321GFY

A game played by multimillionaires, watched famously by millionaires in their million dollar seats.. yay lets burn things.

Sometimes things get so upside down..... that you need to just burn things.:firehair

Vendzilla 06-16-2009 09:25 AM

whats a laker?

Houdini 06-16-2009 10:00 AM

"Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told KTLA-TV he has already raised several hundred thousand dollars from private donators and the city "will not put in a million dollars" for the event."

Riot = ratings on news and newspapers sold = economy moving in positive direction = good for californias coffers.

Porn showing up in the google video results for mainstream shit... Hmm.. And the site it goes to is LOADED with trojans and other shit.

hypedough 06-16-2009 10:15 AM

This shit is just wrong. Why spend money on this parade when we can't afford TEXTBOOKS!

Rique 06-16-2009 11:58 AM

Well, apparently some private donors have ponied up the money to pay for the half that the City of LA was going to have to come up, so now we can stop worrying about teachers and textbooks not being prioritized in lieu of tomorrow's parade.

Just like Harvey Keitel thought Strawberry and gang was trying to do in that fictious Mets/Dodgers series in BAD LIEUTENANT :1orglaugh :thumbsup

In the hole that Cali is in they would be better off keeping things low key. I love sports...but these guys are not going to put food on your table. Insane contracts, they should be paying for their own celebration.

In NY this week they are having the US Open Golf Tourney...and they expect this to bring in $100 million bucks to Long Island, NY. But yet taxes in LI are some of highest in the nation.

I feel the middle class is totally fucked in this country. :2 cents:

Rochard 06-16-2009 10:11 PM

Aren't teachers in California county employees, working for the county government?

Our local school district, while they've cut back on many things, has a huge surplus and has no plans to let any teachers go.

I'm not sure how it works in that state, but where I live they are county and district ran. If the county/city/district can get the budget passed and paid for by the people in that area they are find, if not they rely on state money. Most of the schools in my state can't get the budgets to pass so they get some local money and a lot of state money. If the state cuts that money back they are in trouble.
