You'll need some sort of backend. I like Joomla with the JomSocial plugin.

I'm using JomSocial for a client site at the moment, but it's not online yet. We like working with it so far.

First, get a business model without a huge burn rate, preferably with a modest profit margin that can be scaled.

tips:
-find a niche and focus on it.
-make the site matter to the people on it.
-integrate into other social networks to build traffic.
-make your site portable.
-dont make the surfer "learn" to use your site if it doesnt work like other sites your doing it wrong.

get a 10 friends who will register first on it.

In the end I really only want to set up a non-adult site where visitors can join (register) for free, and upload videos in a youtube fashion. I would like to approve the clips first, but that's all I really want. In hindsight an entire social network suite is probably too much.

Maybe a stripped down tube script would be good enough. Any suggestions?
