Vauxhall VX220 / Opel Speedster

Are these the same car or what? They both have their own official sites:

http://www.speedster.opel.com/
http://www.vauxhallvx220.com/

...and where can I get one of these in US/Canada?!

Vauxhall & Opel are the same company. I don't think they are being exported to the US ...:2 cents:

HQ 11-28-2002 07:31 PM

Too bad... NFSHP2 has made me fall in love with them. Why do the market them as two different cars?

I know that Lotus had something to do with their production too.

Whatever your views on this car it is an Elise variant built by Lotus and shares the same set of core values and attributes. In years to come it will be regarded as a Lotus. Look past the badge and you have a genuine Lotus sports car.

Rochard 11-28-2002 11:03 PM

It's common for car companies to market cars in different ways. In the US we have both the Doge Neon and the Plymouth Neon - Same car, and really the same company.

I remember during my visit to Europe a while back we rented a Ford that had a different name than it did in the US.

I've also heard that the Dodge Viper is sold as the Plymoth Viper in Europe.....

marty 11-28-2002 11:56 PM

General Motors - US
Opel - Germany
Vauxhall - UK
Holden - Australia

These are all the same company. They have some slight differences in the range depending on markets but they share the same designs. You can sometimes see that in their TV commercials (overseas model shown).

That is such a Lotus Elise ripoff. I used to have one.

That is becuase Lotus helped build it (or maybe Lotus is owned by the same company that owns al the companies you mentioned).

How was your Lotus?

mrthumbs 11-29-2002 06:35 AM

it's not a lotus rip-off.. it was designed by Lotus and branded Opel..

Juge 11-29-2002 06:35 AM

That car looks wicked. I've read somewhere that if you change all but 146 parts that you have a Lotus Elise... so they must be very similar on the inside.

railz 11-29-2002 06:41 AM

Wow - a lotus marketed and built by Vauxhall & Opel.

What's next? A Porsche built by Fiat? :)

(fondly remembers his old Fiat Strada...)

J B 11-29-2002 06:59 AM

The Speedster might look nice on pictures but in reality it looks like a toy car... and 215 km/h (133 mph) top speed is kind of ridiculous for a sports car, at least when you live in Germany :)

Roald 11-29-2002 07:51 AM

I like the model, only problem with it is getting into it, damn and when I was in it I hardly couldn't get out of it :1orglaugh

Q.

Q.

Sounds like a plus to me...

Just make sure you give lots of girls with short skirts a ride in it, and open the door for them to get out.

Who said chivalry was dead? :Graucho

Yes, but it still gets to 60 mph in under 6 seconds, and only has a 140 hp engine, so that's pretty damned good. If the price is cheap, then this is all justifiable... how expensive is it?

It's about 35K...

HQ 11-29-2002 11:00 AM

I just like its originality. Even though it looks like an Elise, I have never seen anything like it before in my town.

When it was first released, the motoring press (in the UK at least) thought it was fantastic, better than the Elise and kept saying "what are Lotus doing by building a car better than the Elise for a different company? Are they mad?".

A few months later Lotus released the MkII Elise, which was regarded as even better than the Speedster/VX220.

GM were not pleased....:winkwink:

Actually I meant Euro but the exchange rate is almost 1:1 :)

HQ 11-29-2002 11:23 AM

...or $50k+ Canadian. I'd go for the Nissan 350Z instead.
