What I just can't stand about the LCDs (or any flat screen really) is the messed up

proportion of the picture.

I will not simply set it to fill the screen with picture and watch a bunch of stumpy stretched images, it's awful and not something minor. When I set the picture to be normal proportion, there are huge black areas on each side of the pic, making the watchable area tiny. I would need a 50"+ flatscreen TV to even get near the size of my ol' 32" CRT one.

WTF?

pornocruto 05-28-2009 06:14 AM

Thats a shame, oh well.

i have a wide screen LCD tv and it allows the picture to fill the screen without making things unproportionate. what brand and model TV do you have?

It stretches it unless your using some type of zoom and it cuts off the top and bottom.

When i first got my widescreen i didnt like it but now im just used to it. Everything is just slightly wider, and now when i watch an HD channel that is made for the tv it looks kinda weird becuase im used ot the stretch look

Slick 05-28-2009 06:51 AM

Yeah, I hate that to, plus the non-HD channels look a bit grainy at times, HOWEVER HD is taking over and pretty soon none of those problems will exist :)

CIVMatt 05-28-2009 06:51 AM

It's because you have an odd -non native- screen size

dready 05-28-2009 06:55 AM

I find many programs now are broadcast in a way that makes zooming work really well. Hardly anything is cut off in most cases.

IllTestYourGirls 05-28-2009 07:39 AM

Zoom on my dvr box makes things proportional.

Diomed 05-28-2009 07:41 AM

I have two widescreen plasma's and i've never had that problem.

What DOES piss me off, is those thin little ass widescreen movies.

It's like, I bought 50 inches for a reason.. why make the movie only use up half the fucking screen you donkies?

old "normal" is 4x3, widescreen is 16x9. To keep a 4x3 (non HD) program in proper perspective, you have to deal with the black bars on the sides. Some tv's have "h-fill" where it just stretches horizontally to fill the edges.. Some have "justified fill" that TRIES (but ultimately fails) to keep things in acceptable proportions while filling the whole screen. And then there's straight up zooms that just push in a set amount. Yeah it's a pain in the ass.

Some people get so used to the stretched look that they think it's normal or no different than the proper perspective.. weird.

So you're saying you have a HDTV, but not a high def signal?

yup pretty much.

mynameisjim 05-28-2009 12:06 PM

Not everything is HD, so some stuff looks really terrible on a big TV. I find myself watching my old 36" CRT most of the time. I only use the flat screen for movies and games.

yeap... aspect ratios and resolutions can get messed up with some lcd monitors but its all a matter of tweaking yer stuff...

if you reformat it (zoom it or whatever) the picture gets fucked up anyway (borders get cut off, etc)

when i watch real HD movies (1080p) i'm supposed to set the format to 'widescreen' and then i have two huge black bars - on top and bottom and the movie is just a small strip in the middle of the screen.

i have 4x3, 16:9, best fit, widescreen and zoom modes

(16:9 and widescreen are diferent)

all these formats have some kind of fuckups - its either black areas around the picture, or the picture gets cut off from all sides.

pornguy 05-28-2009 12:35 PM

Turn off the tv.
