Self Destructing DVD's
They are now testing self destructing DVD's where you can rent a movie from Blockbuster or where ever and when your finished viewing the movie, simply throw it away. Looks pretty cool

That would suck though, you couldnt watch it again or let your friends borrow it before its due back

'Throw Away Society' - Alvin Toffler

As per usual Mr Phelps, this DVD will self destruct in 10 seconds.
Be a bitch if you couldn't find the remote in time to eject it :) |
Lame. Blockbuster (the largest video\DVD renter in the US?) makes a healthy profit from selling pre-viewed DVDs, so that right there would mean they'd have to carry both disposable AND regulars in stock. Plus, they make a killing on late fees. Uhm...
I can't see something like this taking off for more than a 2 minute flight. Jak |
I know for a fact they have begun shipping
<a href=http://gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89872>Self Destructing DVD Players</a> 36 day life span. :smokin |
My Apex 1100W (modded for region free/No Macrovision ect) is still going strong.
*crosses fingers* The RCA piece of shit my ex finacee bought me can't even play bought DVDs without skipping. |

This will never be used and i'll tell you why. 1) There will be a recurring cost and shipments involved in bringing the DVDS to each store, for as many times as needed to supply 1000's of rentals. 2) Think about the stock (space) which would be required to store multiple (hundreds of copies) of each DVD in the store, even for the odd titles so they can hold to their motto "We always have it or it is free" 3) Think about the amount of money the stores will lose in late fees because of this. Swell... so now the same technology that makes one sock in every pair biodegrade in the washing machine on the 9th wash is being applied to DVDs?!? What will they think of next? :Graucho
|
blah all these dvd talk shouldnt concern me.. i guess i don't really care where the divxs i download from irc come from.
=) |
there was something similar to this a few years ago, but it never really got off to ground...
i'm pretty sure it was for dvds... basically, you bought a dvd with a specific "membership" and you could watch that dvd for a period of a week, a month, lifetime, whatever, depending on the membership you got anyone know what i'm talking about? |
i'm not a tree hugger, but that really sounds rather wasteful if blockbuster is going to be pushing those on their bajillion customers. Throw away dvds? a bomber for sure
|
24 hours is plenty of time to RIP a dvd movie before its dead :)

Does sound like a stupid attempt to stop piracy to me, but the main reason I believe it wouldnt take off is the late fee's problem, as mentioned earlier
DivX all the way! |
Puts a lot of money back into the hands of the producers, I doubt this will catch on anymore than the divx thing.
