Any Anti Virus soft better than AVG?

I'm using AVG Free and it seems to be slowing down everything... especially internet related stuff (skype, firefox, etc).

Real pain in the ass... anyone recommend anything else?

Lewis_T 05-24-2009 07:54 PM

Try Avast, it is by far my favorite free anti-virus. Free for home use, if you want to use it commercially its a small price to pay for a great piece of constantly up-to-date anti-virus software.

2crazy4u 05-24-2009 07:57 PM

I used to use Avast and switched to ESET Business Edition (NOD32). I will never go for a free AV again. ESET takes care of my spam, and keeps my pc A!! :thumbsup

Ecchi22 05-24-2009 08:08 PM

ESET sucks.

I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security :)

Install the trial and use it, and you'll figure out why :pimp

I pay for the business version and it has never failed me yet :pimp

Avast and ESET are very good and way more updated and sophisticate than the "sacred cows". Panda is very good too. AVG, Norton and PC Cillin makes baby jeezes cri

It doesn't slow anything down if you configure it properly, also AVG updates pretty often...

with that I've been getting pop-ups from the free version and that pissed me off big time, pretty timely thread I must say. Personally I've heard ggod things about AVast, might give it a try.

Chosen 05-24-2009 11:27 PM

Go with Avast :thumbsup

kane 05-24-2009 11:35 PM

I went with Avira and it has worked very well for me. It was pretty cheap too like $25 for year. I did some looking around before I got it and several different review sites and magazines rated in as the top virus protector. So far I have no complaints and really like it.

SGS 05-24-2009 11:50 PM

kaspersky on everything here.

Denny 05-25-2009 12:18 AM

Eset Smart Security :)

tornell 05-25-2009 12:20 AM

yeah, ESET sucks

Ginn 05-25-2009 12:25 AM

Go with Avast. It doesn't slow down the computer and can catch some viruses that Symantec, for example, doesn't see at all.

gimo33 05-25-2009 12:26 AM

the last anti virus i used is Norton..

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 05-25-2009 12:28 AM

Avast FTW

Darkcrni 05-25-2009 12:46 AM

Try Nod32, and Zone Alarm security with anti vir!
They can work together! Wont slow down your comp!

Ace_luffy 05-25-2009 01:29 AM

AVG and Eset.... for me...

bbobby86 05-25-2009 01:32 AM

Eset works for me...

CrazyHunk 05-25-2009 02:19 AM

ESET rocks.... never had a problem

voa 05-25-2009 03:39 AM

Avast for sure

BlackCrayon 05-25-2009 06:18 AM

right now im using comodo. they offer a free antivirus and firewall package.

Spicoli 05-25-2009 06:26 AM

put on norton............then you'll see slow :P

but......re-install avg, custom install, leave off 'link scanner' and you should see some improvement.

The Duck 05-25-2009 06:28 AM

As far as free is concerned AVG is shit, go with Avira or Avast as second choice. If you are willing to spend a few bucks I would get Norton internet security 2009 (norton was shit before but they have upped their game and is now cutting edge) or eset smart security.

Scott McD 05-25-2009 06:53 AM

Been using Kaspersky for 2 years now !! :)

ESET Nod32 actually beat kaspersky for detection rates there. Kaspersky is also a fucking resource hog but ya Nod32 sucks :upsidedow .

Horny Dude 05-25-2009 10:03 AM

Kaspersky is hands down the best. I used to use Nortons360, but I think every virus coder has Nortons number. I would get viruses that would disable Nortons and then fuck my machine up big. Kaspersky locks my shit down!!

Furious_Male 05-25-2009 10:16 AM

I tossed Norton for Avast while I look for something that is a bit more thorough.

Cyber Fucker 05-25-2009 10:22 AM

I like avast and sophos anti-virus. :glugglug

Those are just numbers & statistic.

By my own experience, I've seen lots of infected machines and helpless anti-viruses. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but whenever I see some running antivirus on infected machine that isn't able to detect, or it detects BUT CAN'T REMOVE the virus, I decide not to use it again.

I've seen Avast and ESET helpless, trying to remove the same viruses over and over, every minute, even with full scan. I switched to trend micro and I was confident almost a year (until I got infected with simple autorun shit).
I've NEVER seen Kaspersky helpless, he'll REMOVE the viruses, even if that means damaging the operating system. I hated it before because it sucked my resources, but that was 5 years ago. Now it doesn't slow down the performance.

At the end what's more important to you, just a little bit speed increase or security? Its not possible to go with both. If you got 3 GB RAM, why would you care if antivirus takes 50 MB? What's wrong with you people? :1orglaugh

Oh, by the way, personally, I'm using linux 90% of the time, so I don't really care.

u-Bob 05-25-2009 10:36 AM

Anti Virus software is so 1998...

blowme_DL 05-25-2009 12:02 PM

NOD 32 or Kaspersky Internet Security :)

FelixFlow 05-25-2009 01:08 PM

Kaspersky for the win!

Vitasoy 05-25-2009 01:10 PM

Rising Sun antivirus

MrCain 05-25-2009 01:33 PM

Kaspersky.

Ram wasn't the issue, I have 8 gigs. It wasn't a problem really when just sitting in the background. The problem was when you set it on high or if you told it to scan. I'm guessing it took up HDD resources more than anything else. If you're HDD resources are all taken up then your PC is likely to run like shit no matter what CPU/Ram you have. I used it not that long ago, maybe 6 months.

Btw numbers and statistics is what it's all about. I'm not saying kaspersky sucks, just that nod32 doesn't. That site doesn't fuck around with those test, you can find out way more there than just about anywhere else when comes to antiviruses. A lot of people say oh well cnet said or pcmag said, blah blah blah. But how much time did they spend using those to write a review or two? Not near the time the people of that site did.

If ESET was really useless for removing most viruses I doubt that site would rate it so highly. :2 cents:

Another vote for ESET
