How does terra.es make money?

Look at this site:
http://www.terra.es/personal9/springbreakwett/
no pop-ups, no banners, no nothing. If anyone knows exactly how they are making money from the site, please let me know. I know it's from redirects and 404s and shit like that, but I want to know exactly how they are doing it. If anyone knows, please let me know. If not, that's cool...

Darren 11-27-2002 08:35 AM

ur not for real are u? dumbass.

ads2000 11-27-2002 08:37 AM

Juge 11-27-2002 08:53 AM

EXACTLY how do they make money with the site. I know it's from redirects and/or 404s and/or other shit that you can't see from a casual visit. But, I want to know EXACTLY how they do it.

Dirty F 11-27-2002 08:54 AM

Actually they dont redirect and there 404 isnt exactly a money maker.

Juge 11-27-2002 08:57 AM

Battus, that's a terrible 404. Perhaps the 'fake' one they use during a small % of visits has a little bit more on it...

I'd say terra is one huge ISP provider offering also free hosting like any other providers do. They have their own cables buried in ground so they don't worry about bandwidth too much. But "don't worry" doesn't mean they don't delete bandwidth eating adult pages almost immediately. Times they really didn't care about are long time over.

Terra.es doesn't make money from their freehosting. Simple as that.

... you almost got it right ... the secret is DIRECT PEERING. they have to try to push as much bandwith as they can to get into direct peering with others ... pretty hard to explain, but I guess some cogent based hosting guy will be able to uncover the secrets of direct peering here ...

Assuming everyone who asks a questions is a dumbass is being a dumbass yourself.

Seeing that you do not even know how to check your own PR rating in Google, it does not make you the most knowledgeable webmaster alive either:

Notice how I answered your question in that thread without calling you a dumbass?

This topic does not seem so simple anymore all of a sudden. Funny what happens when knowledgeable people start to contribute...

Again it is shown that he is not very smart. Newbies come and go; As soon as they learn a little html coding they try to assert their dominance over others whenever they think they know an answer to a question. They would look more intelligent if they had just kept quiet.

Check out his threads, they all ask ridiculously easy questions, far easier than how terra.es works. Having problems getting height and width of your windows set properly, Darren? :1orglaugh

If you look at the threads I start, for example, they are usually not easy questions to answer. However, whenver I do see an easy question, I just answer it instead of making fun.

being the owners of the biggest network in the world, including terra, tripod, lycos, plus several telecoms around the world, including Deutsche Telekomm, Telefonica de España, Telefonica de Argentina, participation in Bell Atlantic, participation in AOL and more than 70 TV channels around the world... I guess they can afford to lose the $2 CPM from 404. But what do I know? :glugglug

Jup, I guess that's what it's about. In Europe there are quite a few hub's where big providers talk between each other. And this is how it works (simplistic model).

ISP A: downloads 500pB from ISP B
ISP B: downloads 200pB from ISP A

Let's say that ISP A is an underdog and ISP B a big player. Let's say that these two ISP's peer trough 12Mb connection. What happens is, that traffic from B to A works fine, but from A to B it get's sluggish. Now ISP B has two options:

a) increase the gateway speed (big dough involved)
b) find some good websites that increase the traffic from B to A and increase the gateway speed with mutual agreement.

I don't know, whether there could be some good hosting opportunities with this. If someone get's a deal with a telco for hosting free, let us know!

" Ha sido imposible encontrar la página solicitada. Inténtalo más tarde"

Means this: "It was imposible to find the requested page, Try it later" as you could see they don't get any profit from that. They don't redirect, etc.

About Terra, It's the ISP used by 80% of spanish surfers and as HQ said, they are the owners of the biggest network in the world, including terra, tripod, lycos, plus several telecoms around the world, including Deutsche Telekomm, Telefonica de España, Telefonica de Argentina, participation in Bell Atlantic, participation in AOL and more than 70 TV channels around the world.

Think on it, that bandwith it's nothign for them, think on sponsors givng away sport cars, id they don't care it's because they got much more profit. When you offer something for free, it's because advertisement, not to get profit directly from it.

Another point, terra started as telefonica internet department, Telefonica was the first abnd only spanish goverment company for years untill spanish allowed more companies to start in that biz and made telefonica a private company. All phone lines in Spain were built by them. Their main point is to get the whole spanish language online bussines (counting ppl, not resources, is almost as big as the english one). So their terra.es portal got tons of income from their front page advertisement and even loosing money, they main point is to get future customers.

And the most important thing is this: Their free hosts it's only for their customers and they DON'T ALLOW PORN at their free host!!! but as old goberment company, they got tons of lazy guys working for them, almost as many boss than workers (mybe even more) so they move so slow, takes ages even to close a CP site, etc. Sad but true. But there is a new law in Spain, really hard against the online bussines, so Terra will close porn sites faster now as they could be sued by the spanish goberment.

Yes, it does. I was checking on some trades, and came about this site. I don't link to sites with pop-ups, and I know some free hosts take 1% of their traffic and blast it with 404 and end-less pop-ups. If terra.es did this, I was going to cancel this trade. I guess this will never happen, but eventually the site will die as it is illegal on the terra.es network.

Add Telefonica de Brasil and the brazilian Terra (the ADSL ISP I use).
