Who has a WLAN in their house?

I'd like to build a wireless LAN in my house so I can be online in and around my house.. Does anyone here have that setup? What does it cost and what's good equipment to do it with?

dapproid 11-27-2002 07:33 AM

I'm planning to, the PCcards aren't that expensive nowdays.

mrthumbs 11-27-2002 07:34 AM

Do you run XP?

Undutchable 11-27-2002 07:41 AM

Yep, I run XP...

mrthumbs 11-27-2002 07:43 AM

- edit you replied while i typed this message.. anyway
if you think you are a tech wizz and can get it
to work under XP.. drop me a line -

ok getting some sleep:

i have a wireless set for you the shitty thing is:
it doesnt work reliable on XP.

I bought a few sets to hook up the laptops to our main network :

For Win2K pc's it's fucking superb.. but on my XP laptop.. no
fucking way.. packet loss.. and other nightmares.

So i bought an intel set..and have a spare Sitecom set.

If you run win2k.. drop me a line [email protected].

Otherwise go intel!!

As for the prices.. between $200 - $300 depending on what device you chose (pcmcia / usb etc) for a complete set.

I love my WLAN. We have three laptops on our network, plus my desktop. Any of them work wherever we want to use them, no wires necessary. It's a great way to share the DSL line-- since casual use by on person hardly maxes it out. All in all, its incredibly convenient and useful.

Im taking a dump right now and you don't know it!

MrThumbs, my laptop runs on WinME, so perhaps I will be spared from the trouble you're having. Thanks for the advice, any other info you guys might have before I blow a couple hundred on this is appreciated :winkwink:

I have it set up so the desktop is run with wires, and the notebook is wireless. Still havent figured out how to network them together, but the notebook has internet access./

I use Linksys 802.11b it works great. the newer products support both 802.11a and 802.11b a better purchase since it covers the old and next evolution.

Will airport work when both the server and the client is a PC and not a mac?

I installed a wLAN on 6 XP laptops a few weeks ago, seemed to work fine for me? We had to use the USB access NI's though - not the hotslots or whatever. If you want to email me i can try and give you some pointers. It was really pretty simple - just let me know what you are experiencing.

Yes BUT you are better off with a non Apple product unless you are in the Apple world. We use an Airport in the mixed environment at my office and it lacks some of the administrative tools Linksys, Dlink and others have. Also you need a Mac to admin it.

I have it set up. Easy to do with Win2000 or Win XP or both, or Linux. I can't recommend equipment. It all seems to be about the same from what I read. It's quite cheap too. Can you program a router?

newgrade 11-27-2002 10:04 AM

uh forget sitecom trust etc ive tried them all they even said at the local pc shop 5 metres max, go for a 3com cisco etc theyre expensive but you dont want your neighbout to be able to browse your hd now would you ? :)

If you're setting up a WLAN, check out http://www.radioframenetworks.com :thumbsup

If you can afford it, it works on the 802.11 protocol... but, will also carry cell signals. ;)

kmanrox 11-27-2002 10:20 AM

i use a Linksys wireless pcmcia card in my laptops, and connect my SDSL thru a Linksys wireless capable router model DEFW11S4 with 4 non wireless ports..... it has worked in two different countries and have never had to reconfigure it since day 1.... i swear by it ....
