XXXJay - Is There Still Opportunity in Adult?

Quote:

Jay "XXXJay" Quinlan is one of the few people others point to when talking about webmaster success stories. Having made a nice living during the 'golden years of porn', he is now co-owner of affiliate program OC Cash, an adult talent agency, and other businesses. Jay gives us the rare chance to grill him and extract his wisdom about: what opportunities still exist in adult; are legal tubesites a valid marketing mechanism and tool? are TGP/MGP/Link Lists now obsolete? How much is the "free porn" phenomenon to blame for the current situation versus the economy; Blogs and Web2.0 as a marketing vehicle; and other peripheral products to up-sell to your visitors to make more money from your websites.

Prior to the interview we cover news about a major Aussie ISP's victory in court on copyright infrigement charges; Traffic Dude going bust; the death and rebirth of the Craig's List adult section; and what new pending federal law could potentially limit first amendment rights for everyone. Scary stuff!

Big fan of Sin2.0 :)

Cool interview. Jay knows what's up. Currently, online porn is a dying industry (or at least contracting), however that's not to say that in 6 - 12 months from now, something new won't come along which helps sales to grow again.

mmcfadden 05-21-2009 11:57 PM

porn will pick up with the rest of the economy.... when that happens

trevesty 05-22-2009 12:01 AM

very interesting.

It's not dying by any means. There are a handful of new business models, just some refuse to accept them (i.e. tubes, clips stores, interactive, etc.).

Those people should be out of this business in another year or two unless in a niche market. In Jan at the Vegas show, a lot of the BRO programs admitted they were down 40-75%. Why they would not make some changes is beyond me. Especially if you OWN the content. I milk mine over and over and over. Sites, clip stores, licensing deals. It's like a gold mine.

If you can't innovate, you deserve to be out of business.

:2 cents:

Saying it's not dying in ANY means is not exactly correct.

It's definitely dying in SOME means.

I have lots of respect to Jay as he's a man who means what he does and does what he means plus he knows much more than me about the SEO etc., but if he's hurting, something is wrong.

I'm VERY lucky we don't produce the very much GENERIC (but still say high quality expensive) porn with the free substitute everywhere.

The trade off for maintaining the whole building and all the pain connected with live broadcast and organisation is that the conversions are NOT worse, the retention is NOT worse, but there's LESS traffic to exploit, unless you start to cooperate with the DMCA crusaders running illegal tube sites, which I won't do, because they're doing something very dumb.

Next steps - finalizing all the very much needed promos for bigsisterlive.com, releasing brand new sites in rare niches (coming up very soon) under the brand new sponsor program, then probably setting up also a clip / micropayment site for the whole concept.

seven 05-22-2009 11:22 AM

interesting.

I love ya man, but I did not make that statement. I answered a general statement with a general statement, and then clarified my points.

The O.P. was talking as if adult, as an industry, would be dead. As in, no money to be made. Where I was clarifying that there is money to be made in adult. Both through technology, and niches, among other growth areas. Furthermore clarifying that those sticking to old business models, and refusing to update tactics, presentation, delivery, will be out of business soon enough.

Nothin' but love for the Gaucho.

CharlieBrown 05-22-2009 12:43 PM

how many years have porn been a dying industry now?

Exactly. I applaud the effort XXXJay makes by saying "If I could do it all again, I'd get out of adult."

Well now's your opportunity. Get out of adult, Jay. We're waiting. Put your money where your mouth is.

But since we both know that won't happen... do us all a favor and stop talking. Just because you're uninspired and your content sucks doesn't mean the sky is falling for everyone else. Just you, apparently.

:)
