Welcome to LA. Did you guys feel that out there.

Just had a very nice earthquake. Roller for a couple seconds. I suspect a 6 somewhere, unless it was under my house.

4.7 quake near LAX is felt across wide area
8:54 PM | May 17, 2009

A 5.0 earthquake struck southeast of Los Angeles International Airport this evening, causing significant shaking across Southern California. [Update: Quake was downgraded to 4.7.]
The temblor hit about 8:30 p.m. a mile from the South Bay community of Lennox.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but authorities said they were receiving numerous calls about the temblor.

A 3.0 aftershock occurred a few minutes later near Lennox.

I was at the movies at the Arclight. For 10 minutes I thought some jackasses were stomping on the row above me :D :D :D

goodgirl was here for her first earthquake. When asked, she said she would take the earthquake over a tornado any day.

BradM 05-18-2009 07:54 AM

I was at the gym and didn't feel a thing...

JustRobert 05-18-2009 08:42 AM

Nice roller/shaker but in the middle we felt a solid jolt which made me actually get off the couch and do a quick check inside the house.

JA$ON 05-18-2009 08:47 AM

Felt it (Bev Hills)

Anyone in from out of town take note.....THAT WAS NOT A REAL EARTHQUAKE

Ride throught a 6.0 or higher, then you'll have a real earthquake story :)

Meeper 05-18-2009 08:48 AM

I didnt feel it and I live like 5 miles from the epicenter.

SCtyger 05-18-2009 11:00 AM

I felt it in riverside.. had more of a jolt than the usual rumbling type.

Adam X 05-18-2009 11:07 AM

a walk in the park.. ;)

I surfed the waves of the big one up in SF years ago.. I was standing on the shore in Alameda.. I could see 3COM park where they had to cancel the A's/Giants world series game.. what a trip that was..

nation-x 05-18-2009 11:27 AM

It's amazing that they build the houses to withstand that kind of thing... I am pretty sure the houses here in NC would fall like a house of cards.

Persius 05-18-2009 11:37 AM

i Felt it all the way over here

JFK 05-18-2009 11:40 AM

you have notice to get out of the way of it. anywhere from 48-72 hours generally.

Ive been thru some small earthquakes when I lived in SF and they surprise the fuck out of you.

Ive been thru 2 hurricanes in the last 5 years. when a hurricane is coming you have time to leave or stock up.

:2 cents:

Earthquake - ground moves, a few things fall off the shelf.
Tornado/hurricane - no electricity or other services for 48 hours.

My experience anyway.

JenniDahling 05-18-2009 02:21 PM

How's the show so far?

when the "big one" hits california its going to be a lot more then things falling off the shelf and with zero notice. The scale of devastation and human death toll could be huge.

with hurrican wilma we didnt have electricty for 9 days and some went without for 3-4 weeks. But i had the choice to stay here or go sit on a beach somewhere else until things got back to normal

with a big earthquake the aftermath is potentially catastrophic. It could make the hurricane that hit N.O. look like a walk in the park.

I will take my chances with "when" "could" and "potentially." :)

and then when you get back into town, stores and places don't all open for days. It is a real inconvenience. Then you have to leave your damage in place and take pics and wait for the insurance guy, and harrass them for the check.

we evacuated last year for 6 days, got back and nothing was the same for weeks.

And I know there are parts of FL that went months waiting for relief after some hurricanes.

TeenCat 05-18-2009 04:13 PM

so 6 is normal there? and what if some killer with thousands of killed to come? isnt that possible? or why are you so ok?
