SMG is dog shit, get the 6-speed (i have one, much better). SMG is for morons. BMW plans on making all their future M production cars SMG, unfortunately. This is not because SMG is "better" it's because people are retards and don't know how to drive. BMW says SMG is "safer for the car."

xApster 11-26-2002 06:23 PM

SMG is a 6 speed and can be drivin as a manual... why do you think F1 cars use it ?

I would highly recommend an m3 SMG ... thats my next car very soon.

travis 11-26-2002 06:26 PM

yes, SMG has 6 gears. It's not a manual transmission. It's not driven the same. It doesn't allow you NEARLY enough freedom for a real driver. And if you think Williams F1 is running a BMW SMG then you should go ahead and get it because you're beyond hope.

'Cos they've spent $millions developing them to last for 2 hours at a time so the drivers can concentrate on driving at 200+ mph...

Get a normal manual 'box. :2 cents:

and if you want a car for driving the kids around don't get a shitty SMG M3, get an m5 or the new 7. the e46 m3 is old news, boring. get something new.

I turned in my 5 speed 1999 M3 for the new 2002 M3 with the SMG in March..

The SMG is awesome, once you get used to it you will not want go back to a normal stick, here is one reason why.

I raced a Turbo 911 the other day, and I blew his doors in, here is why.

With the SMG you cannot fail, put it to the floor watch the tach and just bang all six speeds it is flawless, now the Porsche had more HP but after I took him we talked for a while, he said he overreved the shift from 1st to 2nd and could not make up the time lost.

This SMG is great this is why F1 drivers use it you can concentrate on other things its great flying through a winding road and not having to take your hand off of the wheel to shift.

I will never go back, the closet thing I can compare this to is shifting a Jap bike with out the clutch.

Regards,

Kevin

SMG is actually faster than 6 speed. but its entirely your driving preference. If you enjoy driving stick ,then get stick. If just like the car and dont want to worry yourself with shifting get the SMG. Eventhough I live in NYC where there is alot of traffic I still got the 6 speed because its more fun to drive IMO. :2 cents:

Here a pic of me having a little bit of fun with it last weekend ;)

nice looking TT..mine is arena red w/gray..i also have a 98..993 cab in arctic silver..btw..Jerry Rice's silver TT is for sale..saw it over on rennlist.com..great Porsche site..
As far as the M3smg goes..i've had it on order since late sept..and its scheduled to be delivered late feb.The questions i had were actually about winter driving.I probably will order a set of 18's with decent winter tires.I have the 19's on the car when it arrives.
I looked at the M5 seriously,,but after driving it i wasn't impressed at all..its just a real fast mushy sled..and the 7 is way to big.I prefer smaller cars.

m0rph3us 11-26-2002 07:23 PM

i dunno, i like the m5, but at this point you might as well wait for the new one. i agree that the 7 is huge, but it's definately pimp. anyway, i'm tired of refreshing this board, i hardly ever check it out.

good luck with your m3 at any rate. best thing about the SMG is launch control :)

have fun!

If I can give my $0.02.

Don't listen to anyone but yourself about getting a straight manual or a "SMG" or "Tipronic" type tranny in your car.

I've owned (and current;y own) some of the finest cars manufactured. I've owned manual and Tiptronic Porsches and I have a 6 speed 911 cab right now, but you know what...I like the tiptronic better. Get what you want. You're the one who has to be happy with what you buy.

That being said, I am good friends with the head of BMW service at my local (and very large) dealer. I was thinking about getting a SMG M3 so I could take both my kids out with the top down more comfortable than in the 911. He told me that the SMG has some real problems and that BMW "reached" with the SMG software. If your considering this tranny I'd wait till the 2003 models come out and some more fixes are made.
