One of my best friends has cancer

...and it is not treatable. She is one of my two dogs. She is nine years old. She does not appear to be in pain at this point in time but she has lost more than half of her body weight. I intend to attempt to determine when she begins suffering pain and then I will put her down. She and my other dog accompany me on camping and fishing trips that I make and they both love it. When the time comes I will take her out on one last trip then I will shoot her. My heart will break when this time comes.

raven1083 05-10-2009 09:24 PM

oh! how sad it was!

I...of course will not take my other dog on the trip...thank you very much.

uno 05-10-2009 09:37 PM

Old Yeller?

Spunky 05-10-2009 09:53 PM

Why not just let the vet put her down? twice as traumatic as blasting at your pet

uno 05-10-2009 10:00 PM

You go hunting and fishing in a wheelchair?

She does not like the vets office at all. She will not enter the door of the office. I have to carry her in. She would die in a place that she fears. My way...one moment she will be happy and the next moment she will not exist. Either way I will be heart broken so I will do it myself.

What would cause you to think that I am in a wheelchair? I am not in a wheelchair.

a dignified death, at least the dog has been loved :2 cents:

They do have vets that come to you. Taking a gun to your dogs head and then having to deal with the aftermath while burying her is pretty hardcore.

voa 05-11-2009 12:36 AM

hope everything will be ok soon

LexiLexxx 05-11-2009 01:05 AM

What if, for like 2 seconds your Dog feels the bullet? I just don't agree with your thinking, it's best to figure out a more harmless way to say goodbye. I think you will suffer more if you do it yourself.

Sorry to hear the bad news, and I trust you will decide the shooting thing is a bad idea.

Tjeezers 05-11-2009 02:54 AM

Let a vet do it
it is very hard to shoot your own dog, and perhaps causes to much memories you dont want. Best is to say good bey while she is sleeping on your couch for a last time.
I had to say good bey to many animals in my shitty life, and it breaks my heart more then it did with humans.

Paul Markham 05-11-2009 04:10 AM

I think someone has been watching too many cowboy films where the brave hero shoots his horse or dog after a life times service.

So much can go wrong, your emotions, the dog may move, someone might see you and put you off. And the first bullet does not do it's job and there you are looking at the animal that loves you and served you for all it's life in pain and distress. Then you have to do it again and the pain and distress on you will be something you will live with on your conscience for ever.

Hope the authorities catch you and prosecute you.

Let a trained professional do it and stop trying to act like John Wayne, your dog deserves better.

LoveSandra 05-11-2009 04:30 AM

sorry to hear that

Clueless...I am a trained professional when it comes to killing. In addition I will use my .357 Mag thus there is not a chance that the first bullet will not do the job or that the dog will feel any pain...thank you very much. BTW...you are now dismissed.

Git off yer horse and drink yer milk boy. :1orglaugh

Someone thinks he fucking John fucking Wayne.

When Eva was in hospital in a coma, a very close friend who used to be a homicide cop and moved up to protecting politicians came with me to see her. Of all the people who came I was not expecting him to react like he did. He cried.

A close family friend who is a trained soldier way above any level you achieved in the cook house, refused to come and see her. He worked with US special services behind the lines in Afghanistan and is a trained killer. But he could not face seeing Eva in a hospital bed on life support.

Their explanation is simple logic. Seeing dead mutilated bodies, having been trained to shoot people up close and from a 1000 meters. And be cold and detached in their jobs counts for nothing when it comes to seeing a friend in distress. If you had been trained like you boast you would know this.

Like I said if you had any real experience you would know that. Your just a loser who thinks he has balls. And you don't have the whit to dismiss me.

Who the hell wanna shoot their own dog, cancer or not, to save the bucks it costs to have the vet do it..

Fucking sick

damn this is 2009 man - take your dog to the vet and euthanize it humanely

Did you shoot pathfinder too?

Nothing to do with saving a few bucks.

This fool thinks he's a macho man taking his dog out to the wild and doing the "Cowboy Thing". He's living in that fantasy world where he thinks he can coolly dispatch his faithful best friend after years of service. Only thing missing will be the horse and sunset to ride off into.

this act is pure selfishness to satisfy his own ego and he has little thought of all the things that can go wrong. Asking the Vet to come to his house, if the dog is truly scared of the vets office.

Would make sense. But not satisfy his macho ego of doing the "Cowboy Thing" himself. Look he even posted it on GFY, does that give you a clue to his thinking. He thought everyone would admire him. :upsidedow

In the UK we have the RSPCA, maybe the equivalent in the US will catch him and stop him.

No but playing out your male ego is. You clearly have not thought this through and proof is posting it here. Did you think we would all admire you for doing this?

Of course you did and this gives us a clue to how you think. You're playing out a character you've seen many times on the silver screen and you think it's easy. It's not and if you had ever been on the active service you boast about so much you would understand why.

Vicious_B 05-11-2009 05:47 AM

I had to put my dog down and it was want of the hardest moments of my life. The vet came to our house and she laid in her favorite spot with her head on my lap when she got the shot and we buried her ourselves after. I cannot imagine dealing with all that would come along with the aftermath of shooting an animal to death.

Either way...I will be heart broken...so I will do it myself. BTW...even though I live in one of two states where it is legal to euthanize humans...if I am mentally cognizant I will also put a bullet in my own brain...when the time comes.

when your best friend is an animal and you're not Dr Doolittle,... you've failed at life.

Dont shoot her dude, have the vet put her down while you are petting her or something.

Its not 1909. :Oh crap

After saying that what a huge bummer, I cant even emagine mine getting sick. :(

I am not much of a humanist...thus there are very few human animals that I care about.

Tjeezers 05-11-2009 07:31 AM

I think there is nothing romantic or cowboyish about taking your dog to the middle of the forest and shoot it, it seems to me impossible a owner of a pet would do this just to see if he is like Clint Eastwood ( and that dude never shot a dog )

To take her on a last trip is pretty much a personal thing, cant say nothing about this. Vet or no vet, i already feel sad enough you will have to miss her soon.

Hope all goes well, and you will decide a human way for your loyal 4footer to leave this earth to a better place

no, you can't relate to people or understand them because you're a socially inept weirdo, so you shun people and turn to an animal which you feel cares about you and gives you the love and positive attention you crave, since you can't get it through the forming of successful relationships with people. you mistake the animals dependence on you for food, water, shelter and attention as a "special bond" and as a meaningful relationship. the truth is that you're incapable of forming meaningful relationships with people, or you'd be doing exactly that.

:thumbsup
Pathfinder - you should kill yourself if you're such a trained assassin.

Honez 05-11-2009 08:18 AM

This thread makes me sad for a number of reasons.

Phoenix 05-11-2009 08:19 AM

putting her down yourself will be hard

but you are right...if she is happy up to the moment of death then so be it.

i grew up in a place where this sort of thing was common...so no shock to me

but many people here are city boys...so...you need to understand the horror they think of when you announce you will shoot your own dog :)

BradM 05-11-2009 08:21 AM

did phoenix post and suggest you let aliens kill the dog instead? or maybe the nwo has it out for dogs now because they are getting too smart and will take over the world so they gave your dog cancer

who knows, guy is a total looneytoons

tranza 05-11-2009 09:04 AM

Marcus Aurelius 05-11-2009 09:07 AM

I don't believe shooting the dog is the right way to go. A vet will euthanize your animal for free most times. Do the right thing and just have it injected please. Let it leave the world still thinking of you as a loving friend and not an executioner. I'm not a city boy, I've had to put down injured animals including dogs, cats, and even a cow once. It's not easy and if you have a choice in the matter, go with euthanasia.

candyflip 05-11-2009 09:22 AM

The world will be a better place when Pathfinder finally kicks the bucket.

Why not just take your dog out and blow your own brains out. You won't be missed. :winkwink:

A friend of mine did that. The worst part had to be digging the hole as it was a huge St Bernard.

Today is that day.

So what you need to do is put 2 bullets in the gun, one for you and one for the dog. Now here is the tricky part. You need to shoot yourself in the head first, then do the dog. :thumbsup

baddog 05-11-2009 09:48 AM

Paul, if I have said it once I have said it a dozen times: You are an idiot.
