Webmasters : Are we a bunch of naive idiots or is this real?
I think it's true/real that the success of my website is all in my hands.
But I did just have an interesting thought : Scenario : If you owned a pipeline that allowed gold to flow thru it and anyone could get on either end of the pipe line and either send or recieve gold; would you attempt to control the flow of gold in order to demand a bigger cut? And would you take your time setting it up, even if it took years because you wanted to make sure there was no way out except through you? How much time would it take? 1994 to 2012/2013/2014/etc...? Are we naive to believe that our websites will always be directly accessible without going through the "middle man" first? Sounds rediculous to me because it would ruin what the internet should be. But what if it turned out someday that a list of 10k websites produced 90% of all internet revenue; would it make sense to keep those sites in high traffic numbers to insure the viability of the internet? Would those 10k sites then get "premium service" thus leaving other sites so deep in the dark that they are worthless? We already have "link popularity" : Translation : If you have traffic then google sends you more. We already have the drop-down search suggestion box where the surfer starts out looking for info on your site (thehunger.com) but is interrupted with a suggestion of "thehun.com". Translation : "Stop typing and click here". This post is not about google; but I'm using google because they are leading the way here. Are we naive to think that the internet will never meet "Hollywood"? By that I mean anyone can buy a camera and make a movie but ony a handful of players will ever get into the mix at the theater. Hollywood trash cans are full of scripts that would have been the greatest film of it's time. Could that be the path of websites? Pay to play; balance due = $xxx,xxx.00 ; fee waived for "premium sites". Gloom and Doom!!!!!!!!!!!! :1orglaugh The sky is falling........again!!! |
not real.

Good post. I have thought this exact same thing for some time. Not really as a negative, but that's just the natural way the universe works.
The net, like all things will be less and less free/equal as time goes by, the barrier of entry will increase, and the players will be a smaller and smaller group. It's just the natural way. I know people think that the internet is different, but nothing is different. Everything follows the rules. |

I think you are right and it will be tending more and more toward that way as the months and years go by
