Regular flu has killed thousands since January 2009

...even if there are swine-flu deaths outside Mexico -- and medical experts say there very well may be -- the virus would have a long way to go to match the roughly 36,000 deaths that seasonal influenza causes in the United States each year.

"That happens on an annual basis," Dr. Brian Currie said Tuesday. Currie is vice president and medical director at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York.

Why?

You don't think people from 3rd world countries die at a higher rate with just the normal flu?

I think 36k deaths from the normal flu, in our Country, in ONE country, is freaking crazy.. This new flu isn't anymore bad ass than many of us had as kids... The flu we grew up with would knock out entire schools. Last I heard, only people in Mexico have died while everyone else is recovering...

That kind of puts the normal flu a bit above this one.. until it proves otherwise.

the point is that everyone's making a big deal about the swine flu, yet the reg. flu has already killed way more people and does every year.. and the media, etc is freaking people out

I was killed by a much stronger flu back in the mid eighties. This outbreak is nothing in comparison.

True, but the regular flu season is now pretty much over and you have another wave of virus just starting to make it's rounds.

Not to mention, those deaths are with vaccinations given to old people and those who are at risk. Nobody has immunity to this new flu virus so if it does go worldwide, you will most probably have double the deaths of a normal year.

Are we all going to drop dead, no. But it is a substantial health problem that needs to be managed.

Seasonal influenza mainly kills children and elders.

Swine Flu on the other hand is killing all age ranges.

better be careful now a days!

DJ the kid, we have shots for the current winter flu. We can prevent the deaths of many who would normally end up very sick or dead if they did catch it.
This is a summer flu, and we do not have vaccines for it yet.

Now ask yourself this question, what would the death totals be if we did not have a vaccine for the "regular flu"? Especially one that is cheap and often given free to the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.

far more people have been killed by AK47 than an atomic bomb, but that bomb still freaks me out

The potential damage that this swine flu can inflict is HUGE

That's just the issue isn't it. We're saving the weak that nature intends to kill off, so nature comes back with something else. Just like when Nature wanted to end certain genetic branches that were destined for evolutionary failure by introducing homosexuality. We went and made that "OK" and so nature had to go and make HIV.

You don't fuck with nature, she's a bitch.

The interesting thing to check is the infection / death ratio on both kind of infections.

You are getting a little Kandah in here. Nature has no intentions, nor wants.

Plus everyone sort of assumes they would be in the spared stats in these debates. Personally I am not concerned with even the average flu and although disabled I have a perfect immune system - yet I still get a vaccination since I have appointments that are around other "sick" people.

We are just talking about other lifeforms and their desire to succeed on this planet. They adapt as they can, many never do - just when a few happen to they always are a bit more ahead of the curve and the battle continues. For some it may be a virus, for someone else a stingray.
