Horrible wreck in yesterdays NASCAR race

This wreck happened as they were coming to the finish line yesterday at Talladega and
is a perfect example as to why I never get against the fence :winkwink:

Here's it as it happened

and here's some replays

Carmine Raguso 04-27-2009 08:46 AM

Damn, hard hit.

Martin 04-27-2009 08:52 AM

Those people sitting close to the fence down there got their monies worth eh.

And a little extra

Tom_PM 04-27-2009 08:58 AM

Yeah I caught that too, yeesh. Nasty one. Reminded me of Bobby Allisons wreck too, and also a nasty one that Richard Petty had at Daytona.

I saw one race where there was a wreck and the whole back bumper of a car came off and flew over the fence and landed at the feet of a guy who was walking along the fence. He nonchalantly picked it up without breaking his stride and tucked it under his arm and kept walking to the cheers of the crowd.

Now that's a nice souvenir :thumbsup

That guy won the race. They were only about 100 yards from the finish line.

from videos it doesnt really look like accident, but thats just me and thats some fast driving, so an inch can mean a lot ging that fast... but it does look almost like he tapped him on purpose

StuartD 04-27-2009 09:05 AM

Yeah, we were on our feet when we saw the car take flight.... what a burn job. He had the win and then had it ripped away from him when he was so close.

I can't imagine what it must feel like when you feel the car lift off the ground.

John-ACWM 04-27-2009 09:05 AM

That was intense WOW :thumbsup

Tom_PM 04-27-2009 09:06 AM

It was just racing. He faked high, edwards went high to block, and he went low and edwards didnt know he was already along side when he came back low to block. Tough deal, but totally legit.

TisMe 04-27-2009 09:06 AM

Amazing that the new COT car can not only allow someone to walk away from a crash like that but jog across the finish line on foot after getting out of the wrecked car.

Marcus Aurelius 04-27-2009 09:06 AM

I like how he jogged across the finish line. announcer says "Shades of Ricky Bobby" haha

Here's another one that was really bad. BTW this driver was badly injured but recovered and is still racing today. I believe the worst ever was an Indy or F1 race where the crash sent the engine block flying into the stands killing several spectators.

justinsain 04-27-2009 09:22 AM

For those that are not familiar with NASCAR they have a rule at this track that says you cannot advance your position below the yellow line.

At this track in last years race the EXACT same set of circumstance came into play only that race the driver went below the yellow line to avoid the car that was trying to block him for the win. Even though the guy avoided the wreck by going below the line and came across the finish line first, NASCAR gave the win to the second place guy.

Yesterday's race was the same only the second place drive didn't go below the yellow line per the NASCAR rule and instead held his line. The first place car tried to block and drove across the front of the second place car.

The end result was different than last year as the big wreck almost put a car in the stands.
NASCAR will be looking for a better solution I'm sure. :winkwink:

As said above... the guy that won the race (who was in 2nd) didn't cause it. The guy that wrecked was at fault.

Fletch XXX 04-27-2009 09:28 AM

aye, its cool, i am not a race rule referree, no clue how these things are reffed lol but it seems there are rules and thats good.

They have lots of rules, keep the drivers, pit crews and fans safe.

The 2nd car faked to the top, the 1st car bought it and moved up. The 2nd car slipped in below the 1st car, the first car didn't know he already been advanced on and cut back, they bumped and end of story.

I didn't about the yellow line rule, but he didn't dip below it either way. But I'm not that big of a nascar fan, but my 5 year old loves it.

Tom_PM 04-27-2009 09:46 AM

Yeah that Geoff Bodine truck crash was super nasty.. yikes.
I like all types of racing. F1 is a bitch for someone in the US though.. because they air live at like 7am from kuala lumpur in malaysia and shit, lol. Massive rain in that one this year. Awesome looking track though.

I hope you will encourage your kid to continue to follow NASCAR. It's a great family oriented sport that's filled
with positive role models. Much much better than following the lost stars of today's pop culture.

Check out the Feb 16, 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated.
There's an article previewing the NASCAR season and
it profiles Carl Edwards.
Jimmy Johnson says "Carl Edwards scares the s--- out of me."

That is 1987 all over again!

Ravage 04-27-2009 02:34 PM

Nothing wrong with that move. Bad info from the lead drivers spotter in not telling him Edwards the driver was already in on him down low.

gmr324 04-27-2009 03:35 PM

I never knew that even by walking or jogging across the finish line, it's still an official finishing time.
