Police vehicles are exempt from all parking laws (except designated handicap parking) in the performance of their duties as officers of the court - whether its an emergency or not.

does "duties as officers" include getting donuts, stopping at starbucks, and so on? The cops around here even use their lights/sirens to get though red lights when there's no reason other than they can.

Not to defend cops and their pre-occupation with donuts and starbucks - but yep. Still exempt.

A few years back just for amusement I took a pic with my cellphone of 4 cop cruisers (including a staff sargeant/supervisor SUV) parked in a no-stopping zone outside a Tim Horton's coffee shop just after 9am.

Just curious, though - how do you know whether they're responding to a call or merely using lights/sirens "because they can"? Not to say it doesn't happen...but how do you know?
