Pepsi and Mt. Dew Throwback, REAL sugar!

Anyone tried this yet? I keep forgetting to check it out when I hit up the store. I've heard soda with real sugar (and not corn syrup) tastes amazing.

Quote:

WASHINGTON, April 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Sugar Association and its member companies congratulate PepsiCo and local bottlers across the country on their introduction of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback to U.S. consumers. These retro drinks using real, all-natural sugar are a win-win for all.

The introduction of these two new products, using all-natural sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup is a boon to local economies, supporting local sugar growers and processors. The sugar industry employs over 146,000 workers, contributes $10 billion to local economies and provides community support on the local level across the United States.

And now, consumers will have a choice in beverages - drinks made with real, all-natural sugar, vs. high fructose corn syrup.

"While these products are only on the market shelves for an 8-week period, we are confident that the consumers will like the clean, crisp taste of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback and encourage PepsiCo to continue with these two drinks," stated Andy Briscoe, President and CEO of the Sugar Association. "If consumers voice their approval for these two drinks by buying a few cases of each, then we are hopeful that PepsiCo will continue with these two and add other sugar-based drinks in their product line-up."

Look for Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback on your local retailer shelves.

I had some Coke imported from Mexico a few days ago, made with real sugar. You could definately tell the difference.

And since the price of food-grade corn has gone up so much due to farmers growing hybrid corn for energy production, this move makes a lot of sense.

After Shock Media 04-21-2009 10:53 PM

Honestly the tastes is damn near identical. I am pretty anti HFCS and think it is quasi evil, it still is sugar and it still sets off same sweet in your taste buds. Really think unless people are of the super rare types that have super tongues that allow them to tasty crazy shit and are employed for it, then there is no taste difference.

We get the Mexican coke all of the time since they keep it in stock at our grocery story and I honestly like the bottles. Tried Mexican coke next to normal coke and well they both tasted same. I still buy mostly sugar based soda's though and in glass when possible.

In the end of course we are just talking about the difference of the soda company paying 1 cent more per soda. Since that is about all the save by using HFCS. Yet on their scales that is massive.

I have been waiting for them and a few others to come out soon with the anti HFCS sales pitch so they can sell us the original product and a higher profit markup.

Jakez 04-21-2009 11:03 PM

After Shock, do you think maybe the fact that you have access to both types means that you can no longer taste the difference? I've read a lot of comments online saying the taste is fastly different and for the better.. idk I'll just have to check it out for myself I guess.

I think the fact this was released on 4.20 is pretty funny. Although I don't see the relation..

Nah cause I rarely drink the HFCS type. I thought for sure I would. Did the blind and all. Failed and only got it right around half the time.

Now glass versus plastic - yes I can tell more often. Glass versus can, not that much.

Iron Fist 04-21-2009 11:21 PM

Where can you get this stuff? Want to ship some to Canada?

JD 04-22-2009 02:18 AM

:1orglaugh

I wonder if it tastes better.

quantum-x 04-22-2009 02:50 AM

didn't they switch to HFCS originally because it was government subsidised, and helped farmers? :D

Ethersync 04-22-2009 02:51 AM

Finally. I hope more companies follow suit...

Same here in the Philippines. Made with Sugar. I think the reliance in the US on corn syrup was due to Congress' imposition of sugar tariffs which made imported sugar less price competitive plus the US produces a huge surplus of corn. I could be mistaken but I think that's how soda reliance on corn syrup started in the 70s or so.

Gotchya - so it's just the scales swinging back in the other direction now?

I heard that sugar was getting massively subsidised for ethanol production as well.

Sarah_Jayne 04-22-2009 03:02 AM

I don't think I can even remember the last time I had a non-diet cola.

As I understand it, it just comes out 1 cent cheaper per can to make coke with HFCS instead of plain sugar. Multiply that by their volume and you will see massive dollars sitting there. Same reason everyone has been so damn inventive with the aluminum soda can (number of assorted patents is crazy), some of the most minor changes allow for tremendous cost savings at the level soda maker work at.

Now if the market would show that they would gladly pay 3 cents more per can for soda if it contained only real sugar. You would be certain to see the big soda companies fill that need instantly. They are profit driven and sugar or hfcs is just another ingredient cost and nothing more.

it is man. I personally can't stand any colored soda but son of a bitch I had a can of "all natural" Black Cherry soda and LOVED it.

any health food/organic food store should have it

CherryLipsRosa 04-22-2009 01:56 PM

I am interested to try it :)

peedy 04-26-2009 02:07 PM

I got a 12 pack of both here in Indiana. Found it at a "pop shop" near the michigan border. So far only tried the Mtn Dew Throwback and ironically it seems less sweet and less carbonated which I like a lot.

Bingo, the kosher Coke and Diet Coke were so much better than the usual shit. I bet the Mountain Dew Throwback is way better than it's counterpart.

BV 04-26-2009 02:34 PM

Try some of this stuff: http://www.jonessoda.com/files/products-glass.php

Made with pure cane sugar.
Their cola I think tastes a little better than cane sugar coke or reg coke. (and i like coke)
Their Cream Soda is amazing.

That's the only Coke I drink. I usually have at least 4 cases of glass bottle Mexican Coke in the garage at any given time. Hansen's and Jones are also real sugar.

I don't care about Pepsi..I may give it a try but you can bet your ass I'll be stocking up on the Mountain Dew. :glugglug

SBJ 04-26-2009 03:18 PM

hmm I'll have to look for it.. I'm drinking a mt dew right now but this is the first I've heard of this type of it

$5 submissions 04-26-2009 03:34 PM

A bit off topic but anyone else here dig COKE ZERO? Awesome taste.

Sly 04-26-2009 03:45 PM

I'm going to look for it this week.

Any time I see the sugar Coke I usually grab some... something about it is quite tasty, maybe just because it's different? I don't know. I do agree with the mentioned above of it having less carbonation, I've noticed that as well.

I do. i think it's a PH thing. I personally think its the best tasting soda here. I was a huge Mountain Dew guy in the states, but that's trash here.

MattO 04-26-2009 04:06 PM

I always have Mexican Coke in the fridge, it's 100% better than the syrupy HFCS shit. The Passover Coke is better than the HFCS but they usually use beet sugar, which isn't quite as crisp as cane sugar.

Nice of you to share your own personal tastes with us. Also highly appreciate the dietary advice of stop drinking that shit, and also try water. I suppose we all should naturally assume that water is the only fluid you also drink, correct?

It's supposed to be a zero sugar version of the "real" stuff. Close, but not quite. :2 cents: My wife likes it because it's sugar free, but you have to wonder about the artificial sweetener and other stuff like food acids...

candyflip 04-26-2009 08:07 PM

I can't wait to see it on the shelves.
