as far as i know we can only limit the damage, right?

the good thing is, they normaly dont last long

if your server has cpanel use CSF

Look to see what IP's they are coming from. If they aren't totally random you can ban that IP in your iptables. Also, ask your hosting company. They should be able to help you out more.
