They work great with cross sales

premium, live cams, prepaid ads for massive amounts, collecting emails & mailing the free members, paysite programs on the backend to cover losses

I'm going to tell you a little secret now. The very big tube sites are making so much money right now it's fucking stupid. They're nowhere close to losing money and they're laughing at your ignorance. Now you know.

Porn tubes have a hell of a lot more possible revenue streams than a PG rated mainstream tube like Youtube..

Agreed. If youtube had an ounce of backbone they would create an Adults Only area that would have to be verified by a small one time fee.

Also, just because YouTube may lose 470million does not mean that Google (it's parent company) is not making up for that in other avenues.

Youtube is just experimenting with how to make money. If they really needed the cash badly they'd apply their tests to the whole youtube site. For now, they're happy just testing the market.

Bingo... Youtube is Google's explosion of money in OTHER areas. Sure Youtube may be taking a loss, but the massive amounts of data they gather from Youtube makes up for the loss for Google.

Not to mention comparing Youtube with porn tubes is like comparing an apple with a mack truck, they just don't compare.

Porn tubes make money because the people surfing it are all after one thing.. Something related to sex and or fucking. So it's easy to sell to them, any ads with sex can make money.

Youtube has people looking for funny clips, serious clips, movie clips, anime, old music videos, car chases, the list goes on and on. It's a lot harder to target a large amount of surfers when each of them is searching something different.

I have to disagree with the urban legend that Google is happy and comfortable losing money because it is so huge. They brought in a new exec whose sole job was to slash costs and keep up profitability across all areas of their business. And not just small cuts, they made huge sweeping cuts, tens of thousands of jobs cut, etc. Google is just as concerned about losing money as any other company, even more so since they are probably the least diversified company around at the moment.

The urban legend that Google doesn't care about losing money is just not true. They are working VERY hard to turn Youtube around but just can't do it.

Google is doing a huge overhaul on Youtube, which has been rumored to change this week. They'll be separating the user generated videos from the premium/studio shows, and embed commercials in the videos. Basically they'll copy Hulu, but have all the user generated uploads too. They won't be losing money for long.

You partially answered your own question since Youtube only advertises on less than 10% of videos. Now imagine if they advertised on much more and offered many other advertising avenues on the site. I think right now they're interesting in experimenting, and continued growth of marketshare and all the benefits that come with it - unparalleled branding, viral marketing potential, etc.

i think G is more interested in the metrics more than anything - youtube will be the vehicle for carrying media to the masses, and you dont want to screw that up over a lousy few million

You tube doesn't have back stabbing dating sponsors, web cam sponsors and the like. They also have to pay court fees when doing something illegal.

Thats what happens when you are publicly traded. They only show there own ads. Im sure there are other companies out there looking to break into youtube ads without going through google adwords. I am sure they will pay also.

Just the fact THEY OWN YouTube is enough for them to spend a few hundred million a year on it.
YouTube is pure branding, they reach almost any internet user on the planet.
