Is there a car warranty scam going around?
I received a call today about my car warranty... this was like the third this week so out of interest I went ahead and spoke with the people. The more and more I think about the conversation, the more I'm convinced it is some kind of scam.
I asked them why they called me... they said "because your car warranty is up." Yet they did not know what my vehicle was. They asked me how to pronounce my first name (which is incredibly easy), I think my caller ID is set to display as F Last because they knew my last name and then they found my address pretty quickly. Anybody else getting these calls? |
If you have to wonder if it's a scam 99% of the time it usually is... :2 cents:

Interesting, I had a voicemail for this exact same thing. Funny this is, they also weren't specific at all (no mention of my make or model), and it was for a car I do not even own anymore.

I just looked up the phone number... found some interesting replies here: http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-757-990-8981

I have been getting those calls for at least a year...... a few times a week. I have tried speaking to them to get them to stop but they always hang up on me. Not sure what the scam is.
|
I receive these calls all :mad:the time
|
Google the number, I bet it comes up with a scam. I got a call the other day googled the number and it did come up as a scam. I have no idea how they got my number I dont use it for anything but friends.

I don't know if it is a real scam or not, but it was annoying. Eventually she called them back and followed a menu that they had which let her enter her number and she got taken off the list. |
They have gotten really bad lately. So bad, even, that one company is under investigation because they're using the Do Not Call list as their actual To Call list. Sons of bitches.
|
That's funny I get them too, this number (757) 990-8981 is from Hampton Va lol weird peeps
|
I get those too!! What the fuck? I thought it was just a wrong number but I don't answer them anyways, I just always hear the messages.
|
I don't know if it is a scam or not...but...
Up here in Canada, telus mobility (large cellphone company) had a do not call list you could put your number on. And A LOT of people, once they added their number to it, were starting to get calls from this car warranty company. It sounds to me like they purchased the Telus Do Not Call list, and instead of using the numbers to add to their database, they were soliciting all the numbers on it. I haven't gotten any calls, but I have friends that have and one was pretty freaked out cuz she just bought a newer car with warranty and they called and said her warranty was expired, lol. |
Yes they are a scam.

Those bastards have been calling my cell phone for the past 3 weeks. I had just taken my car in the week before to get the oil changed and all the routine stuff, then the calls started a week later. The people calling will never tell me where they got my number.
I thought my car dealership had sold me out. I called them up and totally lost my shit with some dumb receptionist. She kept apologizing and saying it was probably Mercedes who was calling me, but not their specific dealership. In the meantime, I'm screaming at her and telling her I will NEVER buy another car from them. Then she puts me on hold and some salesman dude gets on the phone and says it's a call scam and that he gets them too, all the time. I smarted off to him too, and hung up. Now I feel kind of bad. I'm too embarrassed to call back and apologize, though. :1orglaugh |
It's BS, I get the same calls on my cell from 334.699.5606

Ive gotten 3 calls on my cell phone plus 1 call at my offline business.
Fuckers. |
Same here. Just got another call yesterday first from a block number the from a listed number on my cell.
A few months ago I got one for a car my sister used to own and according to guy on the phone they get the list from public records. They marched my name and address based on her license and address. |
Beware it is a scam !!!! they will try and sell you extended warranty,l became suspicious when they didnt have the make or model of my vehicle, asked them which one of my cars are they calling about. They didnt know. Told them to fuck off. Called the dealership and they confirmed its a scam and NO they didnt sell their contact list.

My wife has been getting them on her cell phone a ton. And her work place is getting hit up every day she says.
|
What happens is this:
About 6 months ago I went and purchased a new car, I had just got a brand new cell phone number and haven't given it out at all. So shortly after purchasing my new car and filling out the info, these god damn warranty fuckers started calling me, and to this day it hasn't stopped. I get about 2-3 calls daily from them, I'm never giving out my number again. |
Damn near all of telemarketing calls are scam nowadays
|
I've been getting a ton of calls. One is a recording asking me if I am "prepared to take advantage of President Obama's mortgage rescue plan" and the other is telling me my warranty is about to expire. I've opted out of these calls a number of times, and waited to speak to them on the phone. As as soon as I get them on the phone and ask who they are, they hang up. I've tried looking up the numbers online and all I get is a long list of complaints but no company name.
|
I get about 20 calls a day from a messaging service telling me my car warranty is almost up.
It pisses me the fuck off.. It really pisses me off because the calls always ring from long distance.. Really obnoxious ring.. I also have family and friends that are from long distance numbers and I end up missing their calls because I ignore all long distance calls now because of telemarketers.. |

"can you guys stop calling me" them "click" |
My 13 yr old niece has gotten a bunch of these on her cell. On spring break she was with me when they called again, she just held on until a live person answered. She asked them if they could tell her the make and type of vehicle as well... since she wasn't old enough to have a drivers license.
It was funny to hear her on the phone with these folks. They call me as well... |
definitely a scam

yes - i've had my share of these calls - I am sure they are getting their call lists from any source possible. I only buy old cars (because i abuse the shit out of them - so no point in owning a new one) and so I have never had a car warranty on any car I have owned - ever, not even once... nary a 30 day warranty in the bunch. and as a guess i'd say i'm on my 30th car lifetime. so i'm pretty sure that my cars warranty has not expired... hope no one actually falls for this |
I have been getting them too...pisses me off.
