Who's a fan of College Basketball?

I have been a huge fan of the University of Arizona Wildcats since around 1983. Great team with lots of class. Here is what they did today (from espn.com)

"....Good As Advertised

Final score Saturday: Arizona 107, Western Kentucky 68. While the 23rd-ranked Hilltoppers aren't as bad as they looked, Arizona is that good. Seven Wildcats reached double figures behind freshman guard Hassan Adams' 22 points...."

:thumbsup

Who isn't. Wow that was a fuckin' blowout.

Crow 11-23-2002 07:52 PM

I'm orginally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina so UNC basketball and NCAA has always been part of my life. March is like a national holiday in my mind. Unfortunatly living in Minnesota now I don't get to catch many games. Also sad they have had such a hard time since Dean Smith left. Oh well they will be back. :D

Joe Sixpack 11-23-2002 07:54 PM

I'm not.

Mutt 11-23-2002 08:01 PM

Carolina has won its first two games I think.

I love all sports. The NCAA tournament may be the greatest event in sports. Because of the nature of it, each game is sudden death, the college rah rah atmosphere, the noise, and of course the fact that the kids are playing for their schools, their teammates and themselves instead of $$$. So even though the NCAA is as crooked and all about the money as any pro league, what goes on on the court is pretty pure.

I just wish the kids would stay in school for 4 years, there would be some amazing teams.

I agree. The pure buzz in March is just nuts. Watching these kids, many of which will never play pro, play balls to the wall just makes every game kick ass. I hate pro ball but give me a good NCAA line up and I'm there.

I agree that it would be great to see the kids stay in for four years, but I can't blame them for going pro. Hard to turn down millions of dollars.

Also, while it's true that most of them don't play for $$$'s, you can bet that the better players do! The better they look in college, the bigger their pro contract will be.

I'm also a North Carolina boy but I chose the better blue (Duke), whooped up on Army today.

Care to make another bet Crow? :winkwink:

BTW, Crow if you get that Full Court package from ESPN you'll be set. It's definitely a must if you're an ACC fan and you're out of the triangle area, in the past few years there's only been a handful of games I couldn't catch with that.

horns 11-23-2002 08:21 PM

LBBV - are you Andrew?

Anyway, I'm a huge college basketball fan. My Texas Longhorns are ranked 3rd - we play you guys this year. I just finished watching them beat a shitty Stephen F. Austin team.

Not that w it would have mattered today - impressive win by Zona - but W. Kentucky was without their best player, Chris Marcus.

I can't wait to see Gardner match up again with our point guard TJ Ford.

Shooter 11-23-2002 08:24 PM

How bout Zaga today? Everyone's been harping about how they were going to be even better this year because they brought in more versatile players after Dickau left but they just escaped beating Hofstra (by 3 I think).

overflow 11-23-2002 08:30 PM

I love my Michigan State Spartans but have alot of respect for the wildcats.:2 cents:

horns 11-23-2002 08:32 PM

Shooter -

All I know about Zaga is that skinny kid, 6'8 maybe, who is now a sophomore is an awesome player.

No. I'm Bill. Andrew posts as Vooman.

How do you know Andrew?

Yes...I know that Kentucky was without Chris, but we were without Salim Stoudamire, who is always good for 15-20 points....but you're right, the way Arizona played today, I don't think Chris' presence would have mattered.

Oh...no one in Arizona calls the UofA Wildcats "Zona". Not sure where that ever came from, but it would be sorta like calling Kentucky "Tucky" :)

LBBV-

I use your hosting. He's the one I dealt with when I signed up. So far so good, of course I haven't started throwing traffic at it yet. Hopefully next week I will, if I get the design for the new site finished, and I needed to discuss some things with him :)

But back to the interesting subject - I have no idea why we call them Zona down here in Texas. Everyone I know does. I'm guessing that some of the tv commentators started it and it sort of caught on.

I've liked Arizona ever since they had Shawn Elliott. Steve Kerr and the crowd yell when he hit 3's was cool too. Outside of Texas, they might be my favorite team.

Ah...well, I run NationalNet, so if you ever have any problems, I'm the man to blame :)

I think Dick Vitale coined the "Zona" phrase. Is it just me, or does listening to Dick Vitale make you want to throw a brick through the TV? If I hear him say "Diaper Dandy" one more time!!!

horns 11-23-2002 08:58 PM

Vitale occasionally has some good insights, but I agree I can't take much of him.

When Texas played Georgia last week he did our game and I had to turn the tv volume off and listen to the radio feed.

From what I've heard of NationalNet's reputation, I don't think I'll need to worry about that. :thumbsup

I'll have to check in to that. I don't have cabel or satellite as I don't watch a lot of TV but this is the best time of year for sports so I might have to hook that up. Thanks for the heads up. You're ok in my book for a Dookie. ;)

I'm with Shooter -- Blue Devils rule and I'll pull for ABC... anybody BUT Carolina.

Carolina as we see from shooters response has always gotten under the skin of Dookie fans. I suppose it's because they kick so much ass. :D

Well what I can I say I'm skeered of Coach D'oh and his frosh - they're great this year, the NIT is a LIKELY possiblity!

:winkwink:

LBBV 11-23-2002 10:08 PM

DUke is one of those teams I have a lot of respect for also. Another cleam program run by a very good coach. Arizona/Duke games are always something to look forward to...

I think this is a good time to say GO TERPS! Hopefully Maryland will do good even without all the NBA draft pick guys we lost last year.

Kimmykim 11-24-2002 12:01 AM

Crow my sweet want to put a little side wager on things now? ;P

Until Brand left early no one from Duke had ever gone out -- meaning that our kids, of course, had jobs after basketball or in place of it if it didn't work out...

Coach K runs by far and away the tightest ship -- 1200 or better on the SAT, no slack for the Chris Washburns of the world at Duke --

I do think most everyone on this thread will agree that ACC basketball is the best :)

dantheman 11-24-2002 12:11 AM

I'm gona jump in with a Roll Tide, solid team that should make a big run this year:thumbsup

PAC-10 all the way baby!!! :thumbsup

That I will agree with. Thanks to Carolina and the next best team Duke. :D

LBBV 11-24-2002 12:54 PM

It used to be that Arizona would totally dominate the Pac-10, winning most games by blow-out scores, however, that is not the case any more. Teams like Oregon, UCLA, USC, Stanford have all gotten much stronger in recent years.

I'm sure when their respective Athletic Directors hired the new coaches for these schools, they were given one edict...

"Whatever you do...beat Arizona" :)

There's quite a bit of parity in the Pac-10 now, and some excellent battles...
