Shitty jobs? We've all had them!

The worst was when I was 19 yrs old ... digging ditches literally .. small ones for fence poles ... in the winter in NY! The ground was nearly frozen and my back was always killing me! :Oh crap

The other was in my 20's doing collections for the L.A. Times in gang infested parts of Pacoima! Saw some crazy episodes and was lucky I never got robbed myself :helpme

What about you?

citizen tower 04-08-2009 06:53 PM

My worst job was when I was around 16-17 years old working with my dad when he was alive. He had his own building company, we just never got on when we worked together and most days he would end up swearing at me, Even remember having to offload all of his tools by myself from one of the trucks because I pissed him off, Was so glad when I found another job

OY 04-08-2009 06:57 PM

Summer job at 16 cleaning barrels that used to contain chemicals.

After that job I started focusing hard on school to make sure I never had to do something like that again.

Man, they couldn't pay me enough to do that job! You're obviously a lot braver than I am.

:)

I worked for Swisher - A public bathroom janitorial service. We would go in and clean public bathrooms (think gas stations) from head to toe and then maintain them every week. It was fucking horrible.

Hostess @ Bob Evans at age 16. I still can't stand the smell of mass amounts of breakfast food.

And telemarketing for Millenium Teleservices age 16-18...It was mostly only criminals working with me.. and I was this little cross eyed nerd... watching them snort pills on the desk.. while I tried to sell Discover credit cards.. of solicit for the police funds...

Then Dial America telemarketing after that..

Telemarketing was easy money for a student.. and for some reason all the crooks, lies, cheats, and druggies liked me.. lol

Had a job circumsizing elephants, the pay sucked but the tips were HUGE!

Some of my best/most memorable and worst working experiences happened when I was 18 or so being a scary, bleeding vampire bite victim in a "haunted house." Those things bring out all kinds of crazy aspects of people's personality so you never know what they will do.

BFT3K 04-08-2009 07:06 PM

I used to work at a chicken assembly plant. I worked my way up to Head Beaker. Once the chicken was finally assembled the last step was attaching the beak. This was the most prestigious position in the whole plant!

I think I win!!!

In college I was fixing a sewage line for a guy that I did regular maintenance work for, 2 doors down from huge party house where 12 girls lived and we partied there every Sat. night... 4-5 kegs a weekend.

The morning after a big party, I was standing in sewage trying to fix this pipe when a condom came out... And I knew it could have only come from the house 2 doors down.

Do I win?

My 2 best friends and I went to work for some of our friends parents...they had 2 daughters working for them, running a cleaning company. The daughters were both real lazy and were stealing from everyone.

We did residential, new construction and model homes all very upscale homes. I'm talking like 5/6 bathroom homes, if you have have a house built.....visit the job site often, construction workers can be real lazy!!! Food in vents and walls ect...

The job was hard-core work, sometimes the heating and air wasn't working. Model homes were easy. Residential was a total trip, the thing's you would run into were wild.

One home I was working in one day, the wife had all her toys all lined up in size in a cabinet, her husband also like to run around in his underwear while he curled his hair. LOL! Freaked me out, but he was a well known builder of some really nice homes.

It was really hard work cleaning, but sometimes we worked around some pretty cool guys and their wifes would visit for lunch. The only bad part was everyone peeing all over, not hitting the toilet. EWW!

I was in charge of driving, since the company could afford insurance on me. My friends worked hard, but liked to hit the basement and smoke a few joints. Once my friend bought some killer weed and I took a few hits and couldn't drive! haha

Moral of the story is, if you have a new house built.....show up often :-)

Before I got into this the worst job I had was standing at the end of a folding machine in a print factory for 12 hours straight filling boxes with flyers as they came out.

Most mundane and mind destroying job you could have, though if I needed money and needed work would do it again. So many friends out of work and broke because they won't settle for anything less than the same plush easy job they have had in their nice air conditioned offices. Me .. would do almost any job if I needed to.

Right after I turned 18 I was the bartender at the bar in the middle of the Ft. Lauderdale Swap Shop in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. I'm sure you can imagine people that frequent a giant indoor and outdoor flea market aren't exactly big tippers, but that was far from the worst part. If you've ever been to the Swap Shop, you would know they have a giant indoor circus that starts like ever hour and a half, and the bar was right next to it. All day long I had to listen to obnoxiously loud circus music and get overwhelmed by the smell of elephant shit. I was also working the day an elephant handler that was following behind an elephant with a shovel and got sat on and crushed to death. Good times...

When I was sixteen I was cleaning a dump - that was my first job, shitty but rather good pay (2 bucks an hour was good money those days).

When I was 17, I was cleaning cars that were flooded with shit as there were floods before, and all the sewers were inside the cars.

That was kind of intense, but I worked with a best friend of mine, so we had a lot of fun while trying to avoid cholera.

The problem was the guy who hired us fucked us over a big time, we did 100 hours and should have been given 30 pct. up, at the end he paid us about 1 USD / hour as he:

- stripped us of all the "promised" lunch money
- no 30 pct. plus after finished as a bonus
- some "special" taxes included

Talk about experience!

Then since I was 18, I was a butcher for a year and a half or so, till the end of the high school, that was good, I worked in the fridge, and got cheap discounted red meat, which was great, as I was working out and boxing at that time, and saved some money.

Then during the summer, when I was 19 and 20 I worked in construction, which was cool, because I was muscular at that time so it was a good excercise and a job you did outside, so I kind of enjoyed that and went for 2 weeks holidays both years to Croatia (last holidays I ever had), as I saved some money on the side.

After the summer when I turned 20 and went to the University, I moved to more sophisticated jobs.

2 years in the Army - that's the worse "job" I've ever had

OldJeff 04-09-2009 04:01 AM

Cove Shoe Factory -

Piece rate, with minimum wage guaranteed ($3.35 per hour), as soon as you reached $4.50 per hour on what you could do, they did a time study, and reset the rate so you made less, or changed your job to something you could not do. Miss one day of work without a doctors note and you are fired, you get the job by being in the lobby holding an aplication when someone misses a day of work.

I don't imagine it has changed much, so it is good to know that the US has and supports it's own sweat shops (biggest customer is the government making boots for the military)

Worst job I had was when I was 8, worked with my father, at the time he owned his own business fixing Silos and Harvesters for farmers. My job... hand him tools and play with the farm kids to keep them out of his hair... Got paid $5/day doing that for a summer, made a whole $105, I thought I was rich!

Such hard days back then.

My first "real" job ever was working in an explosive test chamber for a navy research lab. 90% of it was cool as shit, and the pay was great for a high school student, but then a couple times a week I had to go clean the bombproof chamber - all surfaces covered with charred destroyed shit and black soot and who knows what toxic mess.

BTW the 'chamber' was bigger than most people's houses inside.

Cleaning a movie theatre could get pretty gross at times. Especially when we had kid films. During Toy Story we had at least one kid piss down the aisles a day. I will always remember the parent that we heard tell her kid to take his pants down and pee right there in the row but to aim for the drain.

The one I hated the most was over the phone magazine renewals..just felt really dirty and not least because of the office we did it from which was a skanky side door entrance office on a crap street in London.
