We are thinking about heading there for Memorial Day weekend. I'm looking for some hints on where to stay, what to do etc.

Hit up Jay (Ynot Jay) he lives there ..maybe he can help :) |
I'm all living in Austin, there's no shortage of shit to do.
Memorial Day a lot of people like to go out on Lake Travis and get all wacky. What kind of stuff are you looking to do? |
well, we are looking for condo's/houses to rent that is near 6th street. Since I think that's the most night life there?
We are also looking to do a river tube float. And a canopy tour. I think the most important part is finding a place to stay first. Is hyde park too far away? |
6th St. is pretty much downtown so I don't know of other than hotels around there, Hyde Park isn't too far from 6th Street, the main area of Austin itself isn't really that big, so you can get anywhere pretty quick. I live in the NW area in the suburbs and I can get downtown in 25 minutes.
6th street is pretty fun, I usually hang out on Red River (off 6th), it seems to be where the more dive bars and good live music are. Most every time I go out I don't have any specific idea where I will end up but pretty much every night you can find some kick ass music. You can tube and rent canoes and shit around Barton Springs and cruise around the river down town, and there are plenty of places out of town with good tube runs. There has been a pretty severe drought so I don't know how good water levels would be now, I know Lake Travis is way low. There's Hippy Hollow that's been a nudist area on the lake it was a bit of a legend when I was growing up here in the 70's. From what I hear now it's mostly dudes so I've stayed clear but I can imagine it gets nutty on Memorial Day. |
Awesome, we have a few leads on some houses for rent. Is there any dangerous areas near downtown we should stay away from?
And thanks for all the info! |
and have you ever heard of the www.austinmotel.com ?
|
I like the Austin Motel, Jay. It's a little kitchy, but it's in a good area for doing things on foot, and is a very 'Austin' place to stay. It's what I would recommend to someone coming to the area for the first time. :) There are plenty of restaurants, coffeeshops, bars and music venues right there on Congress Ave, and you can hop a 'Dillo (the cheap shuttle bus) to go right into the heart of downtown in less than 10 minutes without having to worry about a designated driver or finding a cab.
Hyde Park is fine, nice and central, but you will need to cab or regular bus to get to the bulk of the nightlife. Honestly, anything that you rent central is probably going to be plenty safe. Some people might say not to go east of I-35, but I've been out there plenty on foot and on bike and have never had a problem. |
Thanks Jen. We are emailing the austin motel. But they might be booked. I'm from south florida, so when it comes to ghetto, austin just doesn't seem to be there.
Thanks for the heads up! |
Man I loved Austin.. it was a awesome place to visit. I came very close to moving there about 2 years ago.. Would still like to move there at some point.
|
i hear its nice there
|
Parents lived there for a few years 5 mins away from Lake Travis. They just moved a few months ago. Needless to say, the place fucking rocks. Few summers back I stayed there after my Freshmen year and did wakeboard lessons on Lake Travis. If you wanna get crazy, Devils Cove on Lake Travis will be INSANE that weekend. You can rent a pontoon/runabout at any of the many marinas on the lake, you can also request a driver so you can let loose and not worry about driving back. Lakeway Marina is the only one I can remember off the top of my head. 6th street is always a blast for some good bar fun.
|
Definitely hit up 6th street if you are into live music.
|
Right now we have found a few places to stay. One of them is on 6th just east of 35 though.
|
City fucking rules...sxsw is a clusterfuck every year but still fun as fuck.

This can not be repeated enough, start calling around to reserve a boat rental now and get a driver. Devils cove is the shit on this weekend. 100's of boats from pontoons to powerboats and ski boats tie up to each other and people go from boat to boat partying all day. The crowd is a good mix of UT students, local professionals, to party hounds and strippers. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...id=86320 6174 http://www.pubclub.com/austin/travismay03.htm |
austin's the coolest town in texas but it's way too fuckin hot and humid + the traffic is OMFG stupid.
nevertheless, hit up the county line or the salt lick for bbq, the shady grove for some good ole texas chow and drinks. devil's cove is crazy college level fun ifn yer into that and barton springs is a laid back swimmin hole, i lifeguarded there during college and always enjoyed the scenery. anywhere you go will be a crazy headache parking during the good times though, fyi. |
I mirror pretty much what Matt O said.

How many days are you going to be in town? Maybe we can get Austin GFY folks together for a bar meetup.
|
we will be there from Thursday 21st to Tuesday morning. I'd love to get some peoples together a bit of drinking. If there is a Must Do Austin place, even better.

when your in austin you have to keep it weird. which means soco. south congress. I recommend across the street from the continental club. I would stay at hotel san jose or that austin motel on south congress. you have joes coffee house on the corner. and downtown 6 steet like about half mile. expose if you want a strip club about a mile more south the other way. But I dont know about the lake. all the boats are going to already be rented. if you want water for memorial day why go to austin.
Just be sure to pick up a copy of the chronicle on thursday to plan out all the shows you want to see. my favorite I hate to admit is the u2 cover band mysterious ways on friday night. |

I'd say getting some TexMex is a must. I'd say Chuy's on Barton Springs or Maudies (One is Westlake - 360) is probably the best with a nice view and atmosphere. Haven't been back to 6th Street since we left, but it seems like it's getting a bit dangerous as of late... Anyway, have fun it's an amazing city :thumbsup |
The achdebit.com guys are from Texas

Spicy chicken wings Louisiana style, served with ranch dressing dip. Order of eight. Great with a cold beer! and Chicken Fried Chicken Hand breaded and deep fried. Topped with cream gravy. Almost healthy! |
Dude, you're killing me. I'm about to eat some healthy stir fry, and now all I want is something deepfried! sounds so good!
