Guitar Hero on the xbox 360 - question about the drums

Is it possible to just play on them. I mean without playing along with the music? I'd think there's an option for it but i failed to find it so far.

I found a training option but as far as i remember it's just train the songs?

You can play them without the xbox if you have the Ion digital drum set, and the drum midi controller
