WTF is wrong with designers? Nobody needs work?
 

Several days ago I emailed 4 different designers I found via GFY seeking quotes for a simple tour. I was detailed about what I wanted, without being demanding or overly precise. I didn't even hint at deadlines or price limitations. Everything a designer should want in a potential client. Yet so far only 2 have bothered to respond (days later), and only 1 gave me a quote, which I agreed to, and asked how they'd like me to pay. No response. As of right now, noone has confirmed the job or allowed me to pay them. What is the point of spamming GFY if you ignore job offers?

Can anyone here recommend someone reliable?

You may have been a little too generic with your contacts.. Maybe they felt you aren't very serious?

Designers are kinda flakey tho.. I'd also only go with designers on GFY that have a OLD join date and post often and have lots of positive references..

I think designers are like actors. they just want quick pay and not to work hard. any time gave them 50 up front I never got a completed job. I wont do it anymore.

Yeah I've had this experience recently as well. I can recommend Fletch for a good job at a reasonable price. He might even answer your emails.

the good thing about me is im not a designer. Im a business owner. I run the business and I let the designers do the designing.

I think that some of the people on here aren't really even designers.....They're just saying it so that they will feel more appropriate in posting here.

Hell, Headless comes in here with the designer label and we all know he just makes bogus static banners......That's not a fucking designer...

Answer ads, maybe even send in nude pics, set up interviews, then don't show.

If you need a designer, I will be happy to recommend a few to you. Fishing for them on GFY is useless unless you wish to sort through the bullshit.

Based on all the recommendations here, I felt confident Zuzana is trustworthy.

And I would agree that she probably is. There is an exception to every rule.

Can't tell you how many people say not to pay photographers up front but that's how the vast majority of my business is done anyway.

in my experience, i get paid up front 100% from my best clients. Some pay me before placing their order.

Those who go around claiming 'never pay a designer up front" just do not work with someone who knows how to communicate, deliver, and meet deadlines.

Anyone who has steady flow of work must take payments up front, i know I do not start on one second of work until at least 50% deposit is made. My schedule is only for the paying customer, I dont start on work when people dick me around for a week trying to get payment. You want work, you pay and I deliver, been doing it this way since day 1.

Now for long time clients, its a different story, but usually my long time clients pay me in 100% in full without question.

When i see these threads I wonder "who are these shadow lurkers these people hire?" because they never name them, just "i tried to hire 6 people from gfy and none answered emails"

anyway, to anyone who needs something done try contacting a very visible and reputable person.

I'm guessing that people who experience this and subsequently whine about it are also oftentimes the same people who think that they can get great things made while only paying $3-$4 bucks an hour to people no one else hires, because everyone else has been suckered into using those "expensive" designers... :upsidedow :2 cents:

You obviously decided on the wrong ones, then.

That does sound odd. One should think that they'd have the decency to at least respond back with either a decline or a quote as requested. Not answering sort of eliminates the chance of any possible future work.

Funny thing is that it works the other way around, too. People asking for quotes and designers replying to them and never getting a response :)

I had one guy recently jumping a gun on us on another forum that we didn't reply to his email - sometimes mail gets into spam folder and goes unnoticed, which happened that time although I try to weed out all good correspondence from there, but things happen. Someone suggested him to contacts us by IM, which he than did but didn't get right away reply again since we're in different timezones and for all of this unfortunate miscommunication he had no problem making publicly all kinds of bad rep assumptions about our company, just to find out later we're too expensive for him.
Other times when there's no right away response from us it is that we're occupied actually with current projects - although we try to be very responsive nonetheless.

And yes, as a design firm we're not too happy about when people ask for quotes and then leave without a response either - but we would be ridiculed if we brought that up on boards))) but what can you do? just go on with your business :)
