A Question For Blog Gurus

In your opinion is it better to have a lot of pages with catagories or is it better to have a single page with lots of catagories for search engine purposes?

I am interested in this also. I am getting ready to launch my blog but seem to be having some issues. Hopefully I can get some of this sorted out with some of the pros :winkwink:

My categories are no-index so I'd say lot of pages.

I just want to know cause I have been getting good google traffic from a single paged blog with diff catagories and hand written posts, I want to find out if it would do even better with a lot more pages instead of just the one page

more pages = more pages to get indexed. As long as its relevant, and not duplicate content, I would say, the more pages google has to index, the better

Pages... Pages... Pages... I had 360,000 indexed for a while.

The reason you noindex categories is to stop the flow of content and not let it appear on too many pages. Noindex is used to stop the spider from picking up duplicate issues.

If you have enough content to fill lots of categories, then its very safe (and effective) to use the category AND tag layout.

Basically, if you have enough content to warrant using categories also then by all means do so.

Also, if you are going to have tons of pages (like the other scenario) you might as well categorize them (if lots of themes/niches/etc) this type of approach will create MANY extra pages as you sort relevant excerpts of information (posts) and they get shown on category pages. (as long as there is enough content these pages will be fine using post exertps, also category description function to add unique category text.

It can also help if you change the way your title tags and descriptions are written between your categories and posts. Don't have them follow the same pattern. Mix it up, insert keywords...

Free Sites: %blog post% | Reviews of %blog post%
%Site Name% | %blog post% - something or another

That's not totally right, but you get the idea.

cheers.
