The best use of a Mac

HQ 11-21-2002 07:41 PM

Very cool.

Anyone have an aquarium in their walls?

cherrylula 11-21-2002 07:41 PM

I would never do that! to my baby.......:(

They make good boat anchors!

Amp - as kick ass a designer as you are. Its amazing you dont see the importance of a mac.

I know the age old vs, but seriously.

I run 56 digital track of audio on a G4 with ProTools and theres no substitute for Mac Audio - if there was it wouldnt be prominent in all major studios across America as well as the world.

Mac Audio and Video can not be beat.

Bottom line.

I got a friend with an AVID editing system with 3 Macs. Sweetest fucking thing ever.

Macs have a purpose.

Every cd you listen to, was recorded on a mac, unless its old vintage shit, otherwise.

Mac baby. Even the covers. Designed on a Mac. The biggest CD plants are right up the road, all Mac based deisng firms.

Have you ever had to squeeze a monitor in next to a 72 channel mixer?

These come in handy.

the iMac is a disgrace, I give you that.

That shits silly.

IM talking about Real Macs.

;)

Fletch XXX 11-21-2002 07:54 PM

As I said, I got a friend with an AVID system that ran 40 grand plus.

3 macs with the cinema display and SONY superVHS editing squite etc...

and it rocks.

I never swung a mouse across 3 21' cinema monitors over full screen digital video and 32 tracks of audio.

Mac rules for what i dream.

although i type this on a PC.

ouch.

hahaha

cheers brother.

Yes Flectch that fine, there great for studios doing high end audio and for kickass designers doing 3d work or perhaps high end photshop as mac rules that too. But what Amp is probably saying is "Why fucking try and sell this shit to normal people :)" I can't believe people buy someone that has no other advantages except whenever you find a cool piece of software on the net you then find its written for the PC that must drive mac owners nuts or perhaps they don't go looking at all the cool pc software thats available and just keep to there limited mac sites.

As I said.

iMacs are a disgrace.

They are not even real macs.

Im talking about Powerbooks with DVD burners and real Macs.

I had a fucking 8600 Apple back in the days doing audio.

And I have owned PCs running the first sound cards available.

Im talking straight PROSUMER.

iMacs were some of the first (next to the Performas) designed for consumers.

That isnt real macs.

Ive engineered in recording stusios from New Orleans to Hollywood california.

And when they train.

Its on Mac: Pro Tools.

Bottom line.

Thats my only point.

I have friends going to music school in Portland, and have friends who are recirding engineers in world famous studios right here in Hollywood.

And I swear, they demand Mac based production skills.

nothing else.

bottom line.

drunk as hell.

but none of us are running commercial Hollywood music recording studios.... so, that's kind of a moot perk isn't it? :winkwink:

Exactly my point.

Macs are PROsumer.

Always have been. Hence the sticker price. Like people wanna pay 4k for a machine.

Its PROsumer.

Most PC users failt to see this.

This is why Mac has been offering DVD burners for so long.

:winkwink:

$4k isn't alot for a machine... I've built custom PCs that totaled more than that in the end.

Fletch XXX 11-21-2002 08:12 PM

Its as simple as asking a video editor.

'What do you edit your digital video on'

Anyone?

Quiet?

Final Cut Pro

The price alone scares off PC users.

Why?

PROsumer.

Macs are the computer of choice for doing some very specific tasks. Mainly high-end graphics & audio.

No one can argue this, but for your average "Joe" who wants a computer at home, the Mac is a piece of shit.

Unless your in recording or working on the next disney film, buy a fucking PC.
- end debate -

You ever compared them side by side?

My friend got paid for a 3 day study.

He just got a custom made $900 ATA certified rack for the dual G4 running Digidesign 002 and ProTools for a daily mac rental for 500 a day.

Can you rent out your PC for 500 a day?

My boys do it.

bhutocracy 11-21-2002 08:48 PM

the only thing is that when you're paying 40k for a system it's sorta a moot point.. you know that 40k buys a lot of PC hardware too right?? :)

the AVID system we used was mac, and it did rock.. but it's not especially better than a PC for the same job.. just happens that theres a certain platform dependency in that tier of work - hell up till a few years ago you would have included graphic and webdesign in with video and audio.. was the mac platform any better at graphic design tools than a PC? no.. was it just because macs were earlier to the industry and had the strangle hold? yes.

if i spent as much as he did on it then yes.

bhutocracy 11-21-2002 08:52 PM

im not saying macs are bad here dude.. - i certainly wouldn't say no to a g4 lappy with a DVD burner so i could use final cut pro.. but i can't justify the expense when i've already got a 2ghz machine with a firebird DV card for video editing.. does it compare to an avid system? no. did it cost as much as an avid system? hell no :)

What is really sad is that Macs are now for the most part a PC,

PC mother board, drives, memory, just about everything but the CPU. On a new G4 you can swap parts out with most PC's it's the same stuff and now with OSX as the OS which is just a Unix backend with a MAC GUI why would you pay double the price for a Mac, I don't get it.

The glory days for Mac are over, hell the Motorola plant were the Mac's CPU's are built have just upgraded to all Dell's, they canned all the Mac's how sad is that?

Regards,

Kevin

bhutocracy 11-21-2002 09:01 PM

i guess it's sort of like saying hi end 3d is done on either PC's, NT based SGI's or SGI's so PC are the "prosumer choice" when really macs can do the same thing if you're spending the same amount of money and now that the PC/SGI strangle hold is being eroded and things like maya are coming out on mac.

the only macs i really hate are imacs.. and thats mainly because i had to teach classrooms of people on them and watch as at least once a class someone lost all their work because it couldn't handle something.. i even saw a first generation g4 go down after trying to swallow a relatively small sound file.. which turned me off them for a while.
cubes sucked too.. who the hell makes a computer that turns itself off if theres any amount of static in the air :)
but the new g4's are sweet.. specially the duals.. not any better than the same money spent on a PC but definately nice.
