"but you work from home..can't you just take 5 minutes to..."
What part of *working* from home do most people not get? Its not twiddling my thumbs all day from home..it is working. So, no, I can't take 5 minutes every 10 minutes to do things other than work.....grrr
/end vent |
Getting an office outside of the house was the best thing I've ever done.
|
yeah i hate that...grab an office and go to work...might increase productivity :)
|
Oh, that was terrible as long as we lived close to our family. "Can you pick up my kids from school?", "Can you take care of this and that around noon?" etc. etc.
We moved 300 km away 10 years ago and work-wise it was one of the best decisions ever made. |

But you make your own schedule. You can make time, can't you? |

i'm behind you on this one |
This is an interesting point. I find that a fundamental problem, at least for myself, is that there's no real distinction between my work life and non-work life. It allows me to push a lot of routine activities aside since I believe I'm justified in doing so as I'm always "on the clock".
|
Sucks if you can't take 5 minutes to go do whatever. It defeats the whole purpose, you are basically just working a 9-5 in your house in which case i would much rather work a 9-5 in an office.
|
My family is the same way. Can't seam to get them to understand I work set hours same as them!

its just not the case, just because i work from home does not mean i sit around all day. I dont even watch TV i work so much lol but yes it is a horrible assumption for the work from home group, that we sit around got it made. Some get it though, i have some family members who own their own busines and understand that when you work for yourself, you work much harder, but some will simply never see it that way., These people work hard jobs and think "working from home" must just be sitting on your ass watching TV. Not the fucking case. |

Yeah no one I know seems to understand that either. Working from ANYWHERE even home, is still working. It doesn't mean I can just waste time doing whatever I want and magically make money (although sometimes that happens) but usually it means I am busy, backlogged even, and I cant just "finish my shift" like i could at a regular 9-5. I don't get to just walk away from each project at the end of the day and hope its completed by the end of the week. Most in offices get a paycheck regardless, when you work for yourself it's 100 times harder.

That's why I actually enjoy coming into the office, hehe
|
that's the reason I got an office. I had family/friends etc. asking me to do all kinds of stupid things during the day, because it would just take 20-30 minutes or so. When you add up 10-15 people asking you to do stuff even just once each during the week, it adds up :)
|
But you can still go make me a sammich right?

Arg, I must say I can totally relate.

My biggest pet peeve... My girlfriend is bad with it too.
I watch our daughter while shes at class from 8 til noon because its easier for her to get her work done, because our daughter just sits in her pack and play and fiddles around while I have her. But when she gets home, she immediately thinks "hey, he can do stuff for me" and asks me to do stupid shit for her. Then friends think "Hey, he doesn't work a real job, lets tell him to do this and that, and when he says no, say 'why not, it's not like you have anything better to do!'" Fuck that. I am actually no longer friends with one of my best and closest friends because he got pissed off at me one day and just blew up for no reason... why? Because he works hard from 5am until 3pm busting his ass at this factory job for $8/hr and I wake up at 10am and stop working at 3pm and make 10x as much as him... He was jealous, kept telling me to get off my lazy ass and get "a real job", yet I was making more them him. |
|
same here! piss me off big time
|
hahaa yeah hated that shit

It pisses me off beyond what you can imagine. And you know what? Nobody gives a fuck either... they all get together and bash me about it when I have something to say. They always pull the "We work hard at a real job while you sit around looking at porn all day" line... then I say the "It's a shame I have no education and still make more money looking at porn all day than you do at your real job that took you years of college to get" line... I always look like the asshole in the end. So I just said fuck everybody and now I just say "No" with no explanation to whatever anyone asks me to do while I'm on the god damn computer. It makes me look like a bigger asshole than before, but at least I get to skip all the bullshit argueing.

I had a problem with this when I first started doing this full time. I had a friend who called me up one day and told me he had to work late and so did his wife and asked if I could go over to their house and meet his son when he gets off the bus from school and hang with him for an hour or so until one of them get home. No problem. I am always happy to help a friend. Well, this quickly turned from being a one time favor to something they wanted me to do 3-4 times a week. I also had other friends calling to ask if I could do this or that for them while they were at work. Finally when I said I just couldn't they said, "But you don't have a real job." I had to explain that I put in more hours than most of them do at their jobs and if I take 3 hours out of my day every day to watch their kids that is 3 more hours I have to work that night. Finally we had a talk and I explained I am happy to help people, as long as it isn't something that happens every day or all the time because I need to work.
Eventually we came a pretty good understanding and they came to realize that contrary to popular belief I have shit to do and work hard. ) |
yup, and then you're a jerk ...
|
Yep get that alll the time.
|
People don't even accept the fact i'm working.. I just get the..
"But you are home all day doing nothing!" |
Hmm..the office is a good idea :upsidedow

I can agree with all of the above. I also find it some what entertaining when people presume that because I work from home I must watch tv all day. LOL
Thing for me is I work in complete silence as noise disturbs my concentration so for all those ppl out there who think that I watch Tyra and Oprah.....WRONG! LMAO |
was it buttsecks they wanted? :error:error:error

But then I'm not the type to be at the "beck and call" of others regardless of how much work I do in a day :2 cents: |
Worst line I get a lot is
"Hey dude lets go play a round of golf!" If my buddies that work "real jobs" get the luxury of having a nice day off, they know they can call and ask me to play as I have "nothing to do". I know I could just turn the offer down, but turning down a round of golf is near impossible. Golf is usually then followed up with a trip to the bar, and then sure enough the entire day is gone! It also starts to hurt the bank doing this 3-5 times a week! |
I love working from home....
|
I hate the people who feel like they can just do the unannounced pop-in just because you're home. Also, people feel like they can just setup times at any time of day to get together like you're schedule is wide open. I think most people who work from home probably put in moe hours than the 9-5ers.
|
People who don't work at home assume that people who work at home don't work much if at all when in fact they work more than people who work in office and don't have the luxury of "leaving work at the office". Especially if things are going rough when you don't have the luxury of a fixed amount paycheck, however small it would have been.
And yea, most of the people in my life assumed I would have more free time when I quit my job and it was tough getting them to realize that I really don't, but I think they've finally figured it out after a year and a half. |
In most people's lives work and home are so separate they have great difficulty understanding the concept of working from home. To them if you're at home there's no way you can REALLY be at work.
|
This seems like a pretty common thing.
I sometimes got the impressions others were just jealous and wanted to purposely screw my work up. If they are jealous cause they work real jobs, they have no problem screwing you're job up to force u to get a real job and bring you to their level. It's sad when people that should be happy for you, instead are jealous and would rather see you fail so that you're at their level. I always found it super distasteful when this came from family. Instead of family being happy for you, they are jealous and want to see you fail so they feel better about themselves. |

What difference did you notice from working in an office and working at home? |
No I simply can't take 5 minutes to walk the fucking dog, I'M WORKING!! RRRR ;)
|
People in my family had me babysit every monday all day from 10AM to 6:30PM because I was home.
I couldnt do 5 seconds of work i had to entertain him around all day, take him to the park, feed him, play tag, out for games cuz he gets bored easily. No money of course, family obligation. This lasted for 6 months then they started asking for Fridays too. I put a stop to it, and when I did it caused a huge family blowup where *I* was the asshole. grrrr, fuck them. |
But......but.......but what's the point of being your own boss and working from home if you're not willing to use your freedom and flexibility to help your friends and family?
You sure are stuck up now |
mmm I think people imagine or have this concept that when you work from home you have basically no obligations and pay no heed to anyone other than yourself... many may consider working from home as "true freedom" ... but that is overrated or maybe even misunderstood ....
The only way I would kick around and not care about business is if I was making big money (50k+ a month at least) ... and even then I am sure I would be juicing it as much as I can and not taking even 5 mins off..... I work full-time from home and I understand all this bullshit... |
i can spare 5 minutes if my girl was gonna blow me
|
People will just come over no matter what time of the day. I get calls at all hours of the night/day. :( I love the ones that want you to teach them how to work online. LOL

It was classic. |
Oh, and this is a priceless one I got a few days ago:
"I called you five hours ago and you're still at the computer? What do you do with your day? You haven't got off your butt yet!" Gah! |
"What part of the word 'WORK' do you not understand?"
