TULSA, OK -- The world's deadliest spider found in a Tulsa grocery store. An employee at Whole Foods Market at 1401 East 41st Street found a Brazilian Wandering Spider wandering around in their produce section.

The store handed the spider over to biologists at the University of Tulsa who say that employee is lucky to be alive.

Terry Childs is the director of TU's Animal Facilities and a self-proclaimed spider lover. He has a scary-looking but harmless friend Cuddles the tarantula. He is harmless, unless you're an insect.

"The venom starts to break the prey down on the inside and then she slurps it out kind of like a smoothie," said Terry Childs.

Childs' department is now home to a Brazilian Wandering Spider. It's being kept in a terrarium with a do not disturb sign. More people die from the spider's bite than any other spider in the world.

"Within minutes you will have breathing problems, you'll start to lose control of your muscles, you'll start to drool and within 20 to 25 minutes you'll probably collapse on the floor and die of asphyxiation," said Terry Childs.

And, that's why he says people at Tulsa's Whole Foods market are lucky to be alive.

On Sunday an employee found the spider wandering across the bananas in the produce section.

"She managed to capture it in one of these containers until I got there," said Terry Childs.

Apparently the spider, also known as a banana spider, hitched a ride on some bunches of bananas all the way from Honduras. It turns out it is the kind of thing that happens all the time, but this particular spider is more threatening than most.

"This particular one happens to be one of the most aggressive ones I've actually come across. This thing will actually jump at you," said Terry Childs.

A manager at Whole Foods wouldn't talk on camera but said they check their produce for spider and insects. In fact, he said, that's how the world's deadliest spider was found in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"There is an antidote for the bite of this spider. Unfortunately I don't think we have any around here," said Terry Childs with the University of Tulsa.

The spider will not stay at TU for long. It will likely be taken to another university for research.

*runs away screaming like a girl*

Gerco 03-20-2009 07:14 AM

Piss myself...hell.. I would have pissed myself fired a round or two out of my ass, all the blood would have left my limbs, I would go into total shock and be a mile down the road before you could even say "spider..." 4 minute mile be damned. I think I could personally set a new record with that thing around.

Im seriously scared of spiders. Fuck, even talking about them my hands have started to sweat while I type. I have been know to (one handed) tear a hanes tee shirt off my body and literally throw it across the yard, because a spider was on my shoulder... and I was only 12 at the time. Try that some time, tear a hanes off yourself... you'll soon realize how fucking impossible it is, yet in a total freakout mind loosing shitscare I did it.

BLAH.... I can't even talk about this anymore......

UFGators2007 03-20-2009 08:05 AM

We get those down here in S. Fla all the time. The worst is going kayaking through mangroves and coming upon one right above your head. That will scare the shit out of you.

bobby666 03-20-2009 08:29 AM

That wandering spider wandered pretty far from Brazil.

Libertine 03-20-2009 08:50 AM

Apparently, the Brazilian wandering spider's bite causes erections.

How long before we'll start seeing them for sale? :1orglaugh

WebairChris 03-20-2009 08:57 AM

Deadly or not that thing would scare the hell out of me if I was in there throwing a few bananas in my basket and I saw it.

Paul&John 03-20-2009 09:09 AM

Yeah, I thought something was odd when they said Honduras. The banana spider usually hangs out in southern Brazil and Paraguay. I'm actually quite fond of making banana spider-Paraguay references at work :winkwink:

the authorities are surely going to come take that. you can't have animals indigenous to other countries as store pets. especially ones that will kill you and drink you like a smoothie later. lol.

The Seduction of Art 03-20-2009 10:41 AM

Spiders never worried me too much until I heard about another cartoonist who got bit by a brown recluse spider. His leg looked like this:

_Richard_ 03-20-2009 10:55 AM

apparenlty only 2.3% of bites from these things would require anti-venom

doom and gloom

Deesnuts 03-20-2009 11:10 AM

im from Ok. glad ive never seen one of those. got bit by a black widow in Wa. though, not fun!

starpimps 03-20-2009 11:14 AM

A good friend of mine was bitten by a recluse on a movie set, almost killed her... But we had a great "almost dead" party afterwards... always a silver lining.

A few years ago my roommate got bit by a spider in the back of his knee while playing paintball in the woods. At first it was fine but within a couple of days he was in ungodly pain and the back of his knee was a purple swelling mess. I ended up taking him to the emergency room and they told me if I had waited even another hour whatever the infection was could have reached his heart and kill him. He was in the hospital for 5 days and was told they may need to flay open or amputate the leg. He responded to antibiotics thank god and kept the leg. They weren't even sure what the hell caused the reaction. It was really scary and made me even more scared of spiders.

John-ACWM 03-23-2009 01:51 PM

Big,scary and deadly...what a combination

I sat on a toilet in Panama (golf course) and didn't notice a huge brown recluse that was sitting a half inch from my BOTTOM between the bowl and the seat! Scared the heck out of me as I noticed it when I got up - I ran out of there with my shorts on my ankles :1orglaugh

d-null 03-23-2009 03:40 PM

I just saw a big round black widow about 5 feet from my front door a couple days ago, must have killed a couple dozen of them last fall, they are waking up now that it is warmer

http://web.princeton.edu/sites/ehs//black_widow.jpg

a big brown spider was sitting on my pants when I went to grab them to get dressed first thing in the morning the other day too, I was half asleep and almost wouldn't have noticed him but he was fairly large (silver dollar size leg span)

who 03-23-2009 03:42 PM

Any Aussie will tell you - Australia wins on poisonous spiders.

Spunky 03-23-2009 04:05 PM

jakethedog 03-23-2009 04:12 PM

When I was in construction yrs ago .. the sprinkler fitters had a shipment of steel pipe come in, about 4" diameter with orange caps on the ends... when the caps were pulled off they found 1/2 dozen HUGE Emperor scorpions living in the pipes .. it was pretty cool I took 2 home as pets.. kind of cool ..

tony286 03-23-2009 04:13 PM

scary shit ,I hate spiders.

RoCkMaN 03-23-2009 04:16 PM
