Boonex has a product called Dolphin that's pretty easy to use and pretty configurable. I've tried it in the past and liked it, but never went ahead with the project. Take a look at http://www.boonex.com/products/dolphin/download/

We are using Dolphin on a client site at the moment and have one guy pretty much fixing bugs non-stop.

We are now testing a few other options. Joomla with JomSocial or Joomunity are both nice looking options.

http://www.jomsocial.com - paid
http://my.joomunity.org - free

Once he's done, we'll have something nice to work with as these seem to be a popular request from our leads these days. Skinning and customizing the site is pretty easy. It's really just not the best coding job.

Both of the Joomla components make for a nice user experience, are easily upgradable and at this point have lots of support and a community of users behind them.

vbulletin can be hacked for its social networking components.

Take a look at the Google open source one as well. I have not had time to play with it much.

If this is what you're referring to, it's really not a script and totally in a different ballpark.

Ever hear of "You get what you pay for?"
Trust me it holds true with community scripts,.

Save yourself a world of time and aggravation and go with PhpFox.com or http://www.abk-soft.com
