Just had a little chat with an illegal tube site owner...

Mainstream, not adult.

It's amazing just how clueless some of these guys are... This particular one uploaded full series and movies under the official admin account, didn't have any contact info for dmca notices on the site, and was making only a few bucks a day on the site.

What he doesn't know yet is that a few months from now, he'll be in the Alexa top 1k, and a few months after that, he'll be facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit - unless he has to shut down the site from lack of money first.

/sigh

Most of them tend to learn the hard way if at all.

There's about 1/2 billion other people just as cluless as thi guy but they can't
code good enough to get locked up.

Libertine 03-16-2009 09:13 AM

I'm actually tempted to explain to him what he should do, since the site in question is rather useful.

Ah... decisions, decisions.

BVF 03-16-2009 09:16 AM

You can tell us the site for starters.

So, you're smart enough to see that the guy is an idiot yet you're willing to pitch in
and be an accomplice. :helpme

Accomplice? I would merely inform him on how to turn his site legal, and boost his ad revenue.

Why doesnt anyone use their brain and require all uploaders to check a box (digitally SIGN if you will) stating that they own the rights to distribute the content?

And dont tell me that it's because they dont really want to make people do that *gasp* because it's just too far fetched.

My question is that since sites like Hulu offer and EMBED link why not just do that?

I would agree with this if the text also stated you agree that your IP address can be revealed.

The problem with DMCA is it allows the hosting company to just claim it was uploaded by someone else and it all stops. The need to provide proof it was uploaded by someone else would stop a lot. Not all.

If the "it" in question consists of thousands of "free" full videos in a single genre, then the answer is definitely yes.
