Just got my Canon 5D Mk II

This camera is pretty bad ass. Nice step up from a 40D.

Anyone else have one on here?

Looks like a nice camera. I have a Nikon d2x that you would have to pull from my cold dead hands though....

I've got a 1D Mark III, It's very nice.

I am using the Canon 5D still good enough. Also I have read that the new 5D Mark II can have some serious problems in some light situations and its not sure if the firmware update fixed it 100% for sure.

I'm thinking of "downgrading" my 1Ds II to a 5D II. It's technically a step downwards in model, but in terms of technology advances the 5D II is a huge leap ahead... I bought my 1Ds II 4 years ago.

Coincidentally, the market value for a second-hand 1Ds II is roughly the same as the new price for a 5D II. :Graucho

" The EOS 5D Mark II has a rugged new shutter designed to withstand 150,000 exposures. Combined with its impressive build quality, this new shutter ensures that the EOS 5D Mark II will thrive in challenging shooting environments. "

The shutter broke on my 20D in less than a year's use. I don't know how many exposures I got out of it but I sure wish it would have lasted a bit longer. If I had to guess I'd say the 20D was rated at 200,000 + exposures. 150,000 doesn't seem like a lot to me. The other thing that bothers me about this model is the relatively slow 3.9 FPS which is much to slow for shooting action or sports.

I'm sure it's a great camera for certain shooting circumstances but it's not a good fit for me. I hope it works well for what you need it for.

A quick web search suggests the 20D's shutter is rated for 100,000 actuations, possibly less.

I remember a guy complaining that he had to keep buying Digital Rebel bodies because the shutters were failing, so freqently that the repaired ones couldn't be returned before the next one failed... after some probing he admitted he was shooting 10k+ pics a day. :1orglaugh

LOL... Nice camera but the most important thing is can you handle it?

A camera in the wrong hands is whort SHIT a cheap camera in the correct hands can do wonders !!

Adam_M 03-15-2009 11:46 PM

Nice camera congrats.

I have a 40D with can do everything I need and more

You know that replacing a shutter is only like $400- I go through a shutter like every other year, doesn't mean your camera is crap just means the shutter is warn out. Seems like film cameras shutters were way more rugged. I owned a Nikon F3 for like 10 years, it was my 1st camera and I never did anything but replace camera batteries & film. I think Nikon has Canon beat on the shutter's, lenses too! Now if they just had an equivalent to the Canon 5D Mark II with the video option and we could call it quits.

PS Anyone use Zeiss primes on their Nikon??
