Q: What's the difference between Detroit and Chernobyl?

A: There weren't any Nuclear reactor meltdowns in Detroit.

EthnicLover 03-13-2009 05:28 PM

It's terrible. You can buy like five houses for $100k in Detroit right now.

Just curious. Has the thread starter or anybody that has posted in this thread ever visited Detroit? If so...what year was it. Did you visit it in it's prime?
I have a lot of great memories visiting Belle Isle, the various museums, the botanical gardens etc...
The city definitely has problems, but it still has a lot to offer.

In your case, "Come back to Detroit, we missed you".

5? I can get you 20-30 of them for that. And not only in Detroit. Indiana, Ohio as well.

BlackCrayon 03-14-2009 11:08 AM

I don't see why they let these building stand. If buildings are abandoned and not maintained the city should take them, bulldoze it and sell the land.

Check Ebay, you can get houses for $2-5K each. I saw a decent size vacant lot, near an elementary school (populated area), in Flint go for $167.00. That's crazy.

No hot Russian chicks in Detroit?

DaddyHalbucks 03-14-2009 12:28 PM

Michigan and Rhode Island are like two demented half brothers. Both are blue states. Both have high taxes. Both are highly unionized. Both have lost a good chunk of their manufacturing base. Both are losing population.

Yet, despite their demise, the people living in both places keep electing the same awful public officials who keep driving them further into the ground.

If you want to see what an ObamaNATION will look like years in the future, it exists now in MI and RI.

Please. What are the red states plans for keeping jobs from going overseas? This is the main problem...

downtown

The Judge 03-14-2009 02:57 PM

Don't start blaming African Americans now, it is true that 99% of downtown Detroit is inhabited by African Americans but that has absolutely nothing to do with that.

FreeHugeMovies 03-14-2009 03:01 PM

It's bc. of the tubes

That would be a big waste of money.

Mutt 03-14-2009 06:08 PM

take a look at how beautiful most of those buildings were - what a shame.

you can buy houses in downtown Detroit for nothing - and just like those buildings - they are really nice homes and streets - well they were.

kektex 03-14-2009 06:29 PM

Why is Detroit looking like Chernobyl?
I am not from the US, I thought that all the big car manufacturers where there and it might be a prosperous city.

Brad Mitchell 03-14-2009 07:39 PM

This thread makes me sad. :(

tony286 03-14-2009 07:43 PM

;) I've been meaning to go back to detroit for a while now, probably via toledo on the way.
Only real problem I'd have exploring there is getting fucking shot.

Surpised they didn't mention Michigan Central Station.

That said, that theatre looks amazing..

cykoe6 03-15-2009 09:24 AM

The difference is that Chernobyl used to be a nice place....... where as Detroit was always a hell hole.

Brad Mitchell 03-15-2009 10:36 AM

PeteKT took some awesome photos downtown last year while exploring. We should dig up that thread, I believe he had grand central station and many others.

Brad

WarChild 03-15-2009 10:54 AM

Well Detroit was once a prosperous industry rich hot bed of manufacturing where as Chernobyl has always been in the Ukraine famous only for producing cannon fodder.

Inside? Don't remember seeing that.
From memory, it's locked down reasonably well w/ just 1 known / stable entrance.

Props to pete if he got in!
