I've fucking had it with both the government and the media

Today's two main subjects on my country's most popular national news show:

- /b/tard trolls 4chan talking about a school shooting, FBI and Dutch police join forces, in an impressive display of international cooperation manage to arrest the troll within hours, find out that the troll was in fact a troll

- anonymous phone call informs police of planned terror attacks, police respond in force, arrest half a dozen people, announce foiling of terrorist plot in press conference, find out that it was in fact a hoax

Are they fucking kidding me?! Millions of euros in tax money wasted on absolutely nothing, and both the media and the authorities try to act like something important actually happened.

Now, having to respond to potential threats is one thing. Often, it's necessary to react even when there's a big chance that it's all bullshit. But for fuck's sake, can't those incompetent twats at least keep silent until they know what's actually going on?

:disgust

I agree with you. Media and the government that controls it are both worthless buckets of shit.

notoldschool 03-13-2009 11:08 AM

Im pretty sick of mainstream media and the mind fucking lies they spread. thats why the internet is so big, because it cant be controlled by the retards in charge. If they could, Mccain would be the president now.

good job :2 cents: and yes i'm serious

_Richard_ 03-13-2009 11:21 AM

that's the problem with the media.. if they got it, thought it was 'bullshit', and turns out it's not? end of the world.

Sly 03-13-2009 11:25 AM

Media is built around getting information out as fast as possible... whether it's fact or not anymore very rarely seems to matter.

Getting him that quickly was a good job, leaking info to the media was extremely bad.

Anyone with more than a single braincell knows that in a case like this, there's a 99% chance that it's an empty threat. So, details should only be released after the situation is clear, and the media should ignore it unless it was a real threat.

In fact, when it comes to school shootings, the media should all but ignore them anyway. The amount of media coverage they tend to get is probably the single biggest reason they've become a trend. Giving the shooters hundreds of hours of media coverage only serves to satisfy the morbid curiosity of the public and to make it clear to other nutjobs that if they do something like that, they'll become famous.

UFGators2007 03-13-2009 11:30 AM

The news media sucks...excuse me, Fox news is on, time to get edumacated!

The guys who do the shootings want to be famous indeed, for their own weird reasons.

But the idiots who troll about the shootings only want message board fame. If you arrest them and punish them, perhaps others won't do the same.

And short news items will do a good enough job at making it clear that making even fake threats will land you in jail.

Promoting hype and creating fear, on the other hand, accomplishes absolutely nothing useful.

But you support Obama :helpme Who the fuck do you think put him in office?

Think about how us Americans feel about our media.

The story you just discussed wouldn't have even made the news today. They wouldn't dare cut into the 17 hours of time allotted for a democratic mouthpiece and a republican mouthpiece to trash each other over 1 tenth of 1 percent of something or other.

spacedog 03-13-2009 08:36 PM

You can't blame them for wanting to investigate it.. Suppose the trolls followed through with it and nobody did nothing to prevent it after knowing of it?

How about the differences in size between our country and his? Really isn't newsworthy if nothing was accomplished. It will make filler somewhere, but hardly breaking news. :2 cents:

Making sure nothing happens is a good thing. Spreading fear before it's even clear what the situation is, however, is not. And distracting people from the real issues by spending lots of news time on something that never even happened is even worse.

It did make the front pages :2 cents:

Also, if you truly believe Americans aren't being fed filler content as headlines, I suggest you go take a look at cnn.com.

CNN, CBS News, FOX News. I remember it quite clearly, because I found it rather funny at the time. It was pretty big for a few days, actually.

Yes, in a country our size it's much more important to be talking about Rev Wright, or about 1 tenth of 1 percent of a budget bill, or Sarah Palin's clothes, or John McCain's houses. :rollseyes

These types of stories are typically the lead stories on cable AND network news shows. Then afterwards, on cable, we have a dozen hours of mouthpieces from both sides calling each other names and playing gotcha over these "important" stories.
Almost all television news has become "Hard Copy" or "Inside Edition" or "Current Affair" in order to try and keep ratings up in the internet age. It's a pretty sad state of affairs IMO.

if you're so tired of the government why don't you drive a REAL BOMB into a government facility like all good anti-establishment heroes do?

For the same reason I wouldn't stab people for cutting in line at the grocery store: I'm not a psychopath.
