You were invested with him? If not why the fuck do you care? It was common knowledge that Madoff was involved in some kind of fraud for many years. Most of the people who invested with him assumed he was "front running" and therefore able to achieve above market returns. The problem is "front running" is illegal. The people who got burned thought they were benefiting from an illegal fraud. They just did not know that they were actually the victims.

Sucks, but it could be way fucking worse.

Pleasurepays 03-12-2009 12:55 PM

what about personal responsibility???

ok... he ripped people off. YES. i undestand.

HOWEVER, who are the "victims" exactly?

for example, if you gave your money to a broker and trusted he was doing the right thing... and you had no knowledge where money was being invested etc... you might be a "victim"

but what about all the people and experienced investors WHO KNEW earning 20-30-40-50% wasn't even close to being realistic but really didn't care because they just wanted to make the returns? they never asked questions. they never wanted to know anything about it other than how big the dividend checks were on the statements.

i think this guy obviously deserves to be in jail... but i also think that this is a situation where suddenly everyone is "a victim" but the reality is that a large percentage of the people giving him millions of dollars are just as guilty as he is. i mean if someone comes to me and asks me to invest 5,000,000.00 in some sort of fund that promises 50% returns... i know full well that some hard questions need to be asked and as an investor, know that its really not feasible or realistic. so if know all this... invest 5,000,000.00 and make 30-40-50% returns for 4-5 years.. am i a "victim"? i would say that i was also a scammer.

I love how the water fountain is combined with the toilette.

This whole thing is a lot larger then just Madoff a lot more people who handle money should be sitting in a jail cell like that.

Madoff will NEVER be in a jail cell like that btw.

hell with the money he took he could have bought his own mini country

Pete-KT 03-12-2009 02:42 PM

Hes not going to no regular prison, He will be one new addition to Club Fed, Trust me he will be treated like ak ing not a bum off the streets, and he took the blame so his kids wouldnt later on. He is smart and 76Billion is STILL MISSING, you figure out who made out in this deal

WebairChris 03-12-2009 02:58 PM

I have a buddy who works (worked) for Madoff. Pretty interesting stuff he told me about but his kids were definitely in on the deal everyone knows. They just prolonged the inevitable to be sure that only Bernie would take the heat and everyone else would be in the clear. There should be way more people going to jail but this was all well thought out.

i don't understand why him pleading guilty leaves so many with the assumption that everyone else isn't going to be prosecuted.

how is he "taking the heat"? he went down for his role and the crimes he was proven to have committed. that has nothing to do with the fact that one guy obviously didn't do this alone, his own brother was the "compliance officer", his kids clearly played a role as well as his wife. i seriously doubt he is the only one who will be prosecuted.

Wasn't he paying out 46% annual returns. Wouldn't that make anyone suspicious. Some hedgefunds return that much or even higher but those are for supersophisticated investors. It appears he targeted regular investors...

They ALL need to go to jail...

It takes more than one person to run a huge Ponzi scheme.
