Same with me. It's a french word,it would be pronounced 'neesh'.. But almost everyone I speak to says 'nitch' - and now for me, nitch sounds almost better..

Kinky John 03-11-2009 02:41 PM

Ditto for me, I used to say neesh and everyone looked at me like I was shitting on them, so I brought it down to nitch. After 7 years of saying nitch it seems more people are saying neesh.

I guess the moral of the story is you can never win and you're better off just staying true to yourself. :thumbsup

They're saying it wrong!!!

LukieD 03-11-2009 02:59 PM

I think it's more of an american thing to say nitch. I can't really imagine many europeans calling it anything other than neesh.

No where on this page (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/niche) do I see a little pronunciation icon that says "neesh", so since I take the advice of an actual dictionary over the drivel of a idiot who can't pronounce a word properly, I call it "nitch".

Fletch XXX 03-11-2009 03:43 PM

nitch, people pick and choose which accents they want to keep on words... once its been mericanized, its NIIIIITCH!

ive heard many say "neesh" though, and understand why, but there are so many English words that are not pronounced with their intended pronuciation, why start with this one? lolz

Exactly right.
It's like every menu in mediocre American restaurants, saying their meat comes "with au jus." :1orglaugh

mynameisjim 03-11-2009 03:47 PM

Merriam Webster shows the first pronunciation as "nich" and secondary ones as neesh and nish.

So I would say nitch is most correct according to the dictionary. Can't really argue with that.

Sid70 03-11-2009 03:49 PM

russians say NEESHA, so its a neesh TO ME

Libertine 03-11-2009 04:09 PM

Neesh.

Just because most Americans butcher language whenever they get the opportunity, doesn't mean you should do so as well.

Niche, it's a french word and I say it the original way because I don't like to conform to words americans have changed the pronunciation of "just because".

http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/niche.html

niche [ nich, neesh ]
noun (plural nich·es)

both

dav3 03-11-2009 04:59 PM

Fletch XXX 03-11-2009 05:01 PM
