Isn't the "drug war" really about harder stuff, like cocaine, ecstasy, etc...?

The Mexican cartels are the ones that distribute the cocaine...It's goes from Colombia to there. Colombia is like the manufacturer, Mexico the distributer, and the USA the consumer.

no. Thats a huge misconception.

Marijuana makes up a huge amount of the arrests made in the "drug war" - almost half of ALL "drug arrests" are marijuana.

You can dig up, if youre lucky, spending reports on police and see "marijuana eradication" is funded heavily throughout any state with MJ and this is because most have the misconception as you do. In fact, its been reported that the FOCUS OF THE DRUG WAR is marijuana!

here is article:

Quote:

The focus of the drug war in the United States has shifted significantly over the past decade from hard drugs to marijuana, which now accounts for nearly half of all drug arrests nationwide, according to an analysis of federal crime statistics released yesterday.

As an ardent member of http://www.safeaccessnow.org yes it is. Look at arrest stats...

We represent patients and doctors from all over the US.

If you dont think the drug war is about marijuana you arent paying attention to the facts.

I fight for patient rights everyday, and everyday we have to fight more, and its because the DEA is constantly raiding patients and focusing on MJ in the US.

The study of FBI data by a Washington-based think tank, the Sentencing Project, found that the proportion of heroin and cocaine cases plummeted from 55 percent of all drug arrests in 1992 to less than 30 percent 10 years later. During the same period, marijuana arrests rose from 28 percent of the total to 45 percent.

great quotes in that article:
Quote:

"In reality, the war on drugs as pursued in the 1990s was to a large degree a war on marijuana," said Ryan S. King, the study's co-author and a research associate at the Sentencing Project. "Marijuana is the most widely used illegal substance, but that doesn't explain this level of growth over time. . . . The question is, is this really where we want to be spending all our money?"

Interesting...

I'm under the impression that in your article "drug war" means fighting drugs in the USA (drug arrests, etc.), whereas in boneprone's article, it is the drugs being imported, since they say, "President Felipe Calderon's security cabinet met in the city last week to devise a strategy to combat narcotraffickers."

People can call what they want, The War on Drugs, I am specifically referring to what Nixon started when he created the DEA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_on_drugs

I am sure anytime a cop arrests someone they feel they are part of the Drug War, so its all relative. Nixon first used the term and thats how I use it.\

Nixon wanted to stop personal drug use, and use the term "War on Drugs" and thus the term was coined... they werent yelling about mexican cocaine yet, it was "lets get rid of the evil negro marijuana and the spick grass" the war on drugs was started more about pot than any hard drugs facing america today.

Agent 488 03-06-2009 01:22 PM

it's about a disruption of the cocaine supply routes.

notoldschool 03-06-2009 01:26 PM

Our goverment LOVES the war on drugs.
