What exactly are they trying to say?

you are hard on?

Hard wood... dense? Stubborn perhaps?
Hard to stain? lol I dont know, never heard that one before.

perhaps it's related to:

"Thick as a plank",

"Wooden headed",

or, perhaps you are actually one of those carved wooden indians that they used to have outside stores and never realized it until now....

It all depends on the context, possibly a nice way to say you are ignorant to different viewpoints.

maybe they mean you are exceptionally tough or stoic, just in a very awkward way

meaning they can't seem to get anything through to you, like talking to a wall
