$28,067.31 data bill for watching a Bears game via slingbox!

Quote:

A hapless Slingbox user managed to run up a data bill of $28,067.31 watching a game of American football, despite being aboard a docked cruise liner and having an unlimited data tariff, thanks to a technical hitch or two.

roaming is the biggest scam ever to hit telecom... it's just stupidly insane.

If you too my cost per minute and doubled it and took the cost of the network I was roaming on and doubled it... it still wouldn't add up to what they charge me for roaming.

Seriously, it's just madness that they can charge so much for the privilege of using another network's data.

Could have used that money to buy a few suites at the Warriors game for like a week or two...

sandman! 02-24-2009 01:54 PM

roaming sucks ass get hit for $100 extra somehow every time i take a trip overseas.

d-null 02-24-2009 02:08 PM

yeah, I've had $1200 bills for a month often due to roaming, it feels like such a scam

Nah roaming isn't long-term enough. You might walk out of the roaming zone. I hear Jupiter likes those 1 year auto-renew contracts. :winkwink:

I have prepaid accounts for every country I need to visit... Just swap the GSM card in, and every trip I take doesn't cost me more than $15-20 with long distance and data.

This guy was on a cruise shit that was still at a Miami port. They waved the charges in the end but still crazy that he got the bill in the first place.

Sad that it took a national newspaper bitching to get it reversed... They should have seen it, noticed the error and reversed it.. but like always, huge corporations are greedy.

Yeah I read the article, ridiculous that it even happened and even worse that it took so much work to get resolved :(

SBJ 02-24-2009 02:45 PM

question is did the Bears win that game?

JenniDahling 02-24-2009 03:18 PM

Crazy. Internet use on the ship is usually $75 for a 90 min card, and I know carriers charge an ass load for using your cell at sea, if you can even get reception, so you'd figure he'd know better.

Yeah it sounds like it was the cruise ship's fault for not having their signal off while at port.

LiveDose 02-24-2009 04:54 PM

Too crazy lol.
