What's the best field in computer networking? Also the best certifications to have and keep a job in major cities?

VoIP and Cisco certification. If you can do manage VoIP, you can handle anything else, because it about load-balancing, prioritizing and QOS

If you have to ask...

I've thought about certifications every time work was slow, but in the end I always decided it was a waste of time and money. Many feel certifications are for people without actual skills.
My suggestion:
take a lower job and work your way up learning actual on the job skills rather than how to master a certification course. I think you'll get to the high paying job faster this way.

I also think working with hobby type projects are always great resume builders. Example, if you go submit some neat little module to an open source project it's a great conversation starter. Esepcially when you find out your future boss has used the application you worked on.

you could show the tiniest bit of initiative and plug some of those terms into google.....

if you dont have the drive to figure that out for yourself, then you should find something else. With that approach you wont even complete the first chapter
