Conor collapsed and died minutes after the "unprovoked and brutal assault" in August last year, a jury at Manchester Crown Court heard.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted manslaughter but his plea was rejected by the Crown.

The jury of seven men and five women took less than an hour to find him guilty of murder following a five-day trial.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman said: "The 16-year-old boy wanted to confront Conor over the alleged theft of an Xbox game, and fatally stabbed him in the early hours of Saturday August 16 2008."

The police spokesman said the defendant threatened "to kill" anyone who mentioned his name to the police.

The court heard that Conor lived with his mother in Moston, north Manchester, and was staying at a relative's house on the night he died.

Prosecutor Charles Chruszcz QC told the jury the boy, a joinery student, left to go to a house party. He said he and his friends were asked to wait outside the house in Garnant Close, Moston.

Conor's attacker came out of the house and smashed him over the head with a full lager can before taking a kitchen knife from his waistband and stabbing him in the back as he turned to escape, the jury heard.

Mr Chruszcz said Conor ran a short distance to a grassy area where he collapsed and died.

He suffered a single stab wound which severed the main artery in his body and led to extensive internal bleeding.

The jury heard that after the deadly attack, the defendant stood in the road shouting that "he was the best, he was the man".

The prosecutor said: "Conor Black, who was 16, died as a result of an unprovoked and brutal assault. He was struck violently over the head with a full can of beer then he was stabbed in the back, he never stood a chance."

The jury heard the defendant was unable to read or write properly and had been unable to tell the time or tie his own shoelaces when he was 10.

He will be sentenced alongside another man, John Boyd, at Manchester Crown Court on February 20.

Boyd, 21, of Nowell Road, Middleton, Manchester, pleaded guilty to section 47 assault and perverting the course of justice.

On September 8 last year he chased a 16-year-old witness to the murder into a house in Moston and punched him in the face before warning him "never to call his friend a murderer again".

A 17-year-old boy, a cousin of the 16-year-old defendant, was cleared of perverting the course of justice. He had denied the charge.
