Think of alternatives of the CC, like mobile SMS billing. Available at the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. More countries will follow, but already 50.000.000 + customers.

Give it a try, cost you nothing. OK, it's a little bit new, but new things good be very interesting.

Bobo 11-18-2002 03:59 PM

I can't wait for more competition to surface. Fuck Visa and Mastercard.

FlyingIguana 11-18-2002 04:07 PM

credit cards should use a pin system.

And when I loaded the page to read the article...the sponsor of the article? None other than an MSN VISA card :1orglaugh

RedShoe 11-18-2002 04:08 PM

...demanding that merchants take their debit cards or lose access to credit-card sales.

Anyone here listen to the Jerky boys? This sounds like the one where Frank Rizzo is calling to get a job as a used car salesman. The guy asks him how he sells cars. So Frank says, "I slam thier head down on the hood, and I say, ' buy this fuckin car or I'll break your fuckin head'. Hey don't laugh, it works."

Well, apparently Frank Rizzo is right.l I can just see Visa reps now, going down to Texas, in some small town, roughing up ma a nd pa's general store. "You'll fuckin use our cards only, or I'll break your fuckin head"

I've been using Discover, exclusively, for the last two months or so. It's not much, but hey, I'd rather someone else get my business...

Somebody should pull a 'fight club' on all Visa's buildings...

Gemini 11-18-2002 04:48 PM

V / MC has (back) charged brick and mortar businesses 1-2-3% of the amount that was charged for years. "Right to accept their cards" or some nonsense. :1orglaugh

That hadn't soaked all the way in until we were talking about it here last night. One of our friends loses up to 8% of his sales profits that way. :( And they have to agree to NOT jack up their prices to try and recoup it!!!!

Thieves comes to mind!

This antitrust litigation is nothing new... It was began by large companies such as Walmart many years ago.

Anyone with a merchant account has the option of joining the class-action. I have joined it.

Does any one know how to go about joining this antitrust class action litigation? Thanks, Alex

Yeah -- just like Microsoft did.

Anyone else find it amusing that WALMART the biggest of the big boys that like to push people around are heading up this lawsuit? :1orglaugh

Do you think Visa and Mastercard get together and plan this shit out, cause that would really be some monopoly shit...

RedShoe 11-18-2002 05:36 PM

"Shut up you stupid Walmart, or I'll punch you!"

"MOM!! Visa is picking on me again. HE says he's going to hit me"

"Well, hit him back."

I was going to draw a nice cartoon depicting my above 3 line play. But I just can't draw. But it would look like a R.Crumb cartooon.

Apparently everyone who had a merchant's account during the period in question is involved unless they explicitly opt out. At least, that seemed to be the jist of the letter I got from my processing bank about 6 months ago.

I think if you have a Visa/MC merchant account, you are automatically included unless you opt-out. I got a big fat packet in the mail. I would assume they are sending them to everyone with a merchant account.

If you don't have a merchant account, you can't join. Using a 3rd-party such as Ibill doesn't count.

There is finally a court date set for this in 2003.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Plaintiff-Appellee, v. VISA U.S.A., INC., MASTERCARD INTERNATIONAL, INC., and VISA INTERNATIONAL, INC. Defendants-Appellants.

Well, actually, that's exactly what Wal-Mart, et. al. is attempting to do with the antitrust lawsuit.

prolly not...VISA is so huge, it's not like their gonna have all their resources tied up fighting the feds...When microsoft was being sued by the feds, they put out several products including XP, so it's not like this is gonna tie up any valuable resources other than their legal team.

Ok, fine, a lot of us have merchant accounts....any one have any idea how much doe we might see if VISA loses? Is it gonna take years?

salsbury 11-19-2002 12:14 AM

this part is VERY funny:

"To consumers at the cash register, Visa and MasterCard?s versions of debit cards look and can appear to work like credit cards. But when used that way, they impose fees on retailers that are far higher than conventional debit cards, which electronically draw cash instantly from consumers? checking accounts. Visa and MasterCard?s debit-card transactions withdraw money from checking accounts but use an offline, signature-based system. Retailers say that forces them to pay billions of dollars a year in extra processing charges, costs they say they must pass on to customers."

uh, they already do this for every single item in their store. they boost their prices by 2% or so to make up for the credit card cost. if we use so-called "conventional debit cards", we're giving them an additional 2% or so profit.

how funny.

Paul Markham 11-19-2002 12:53 AM

I wonder how long it will be before the EU gets in on the action. Those boys hate anything like this.
