Do you restart your server(s)

Newbie question I know but do you ever restart your servers if everything is running fine?

Is there a rule of thumb for how often you should do it?

Klen 02-20-2009 09:13 AM

There is no need for restart if everything works fine.

ro8in 02-20-2009 09:21 AM

never..

if you need to restart then there's something wrong....

reboots does a server the most harm. Thats when most of the times harddisks fail.

UFGators2007 02-20-2009 10:21 AM

No need to reboot if everything is fine. You may want to look into setting a schedule for maintenance though. :2 cents:

I have no idea why anyone would reboot a linux/unix server that is running fine, it doesn't do anything, if it's windows maybe

bloggerz 02-20-2009 10:45 AM

if it aint broke, dont fix it

PersianKitty 02-20-2009 10:53 AM

One of mine (running a couple of old scripts I still use) has been up for 1750 days (4.75 years).

I don't reboot but I do restart HTTTPD and MySQL from time to time.

What about when you upgrade the kernel?

I did that and there was no downtime(atleast i didnt notice it)

JB. 02-20-2009 06:00 PM

Kernel upgrades are generally the only reason I reboot servers, don't trust Ksplice to do it.
