Playboy Magazine is horrible now.

I had not look closely at a playboy in a while and the quality of it is horrible. It is thin and very poorly laid out. Amazing how far they have fallen...

Brujah 02-20-2009 07:15 AM

Playboy should add more celebrities, like Maxim.

Fletch XXX 02-20-2009 07:24 AM

this is just a guess but id say mag sales have to be hurting at this time, sure people still buying em, but really. I know i have zero desire to buy a porn mag. zero. but thats me... in the old days it was more common for guys to have skin mags in bathroom under bed, but nowadays, if you dont lock up your porn youll go to jail on "letting minor access porn" by having neighbor kid poop in your bathroom one day and find your playboy. too risky to have porn laying around, most want to hide it on 500gig drives.

candyflip 02-20-2009 07:26 AM

I have a subscription, but didn't pay for it. I've been getting it for free since Lensman posted a link quite a few years back.

I don't think that any of the magazines that come to my house have paid subscriptions anymore.

Sosa 02-20-2009 07:52 AM

Same as CandyFlip although I don't receive the Maxim ones anymore.

Indeed. The only time I have bought playboy (well pre internet days I guess) is when there was a celebrity posing nude.

tammix 02-20-2009 08:24 AM

I heard they are leaving glossy paper and use newsprint instead
LOL

Then you must have noticed this. Compare one just six months ago to now. It is amazing the difference.

The weird thing is that the brand name is as strong as ever. They have the show, the mansion, merchandising. I just do not get why they don't embrace the web and move on.

Zorgman 02-20-2009 08:44 AM

If I had any advice, I would say keep your mag prints to subscribers ONLY. That way your know how many to print or around abouts.

Work more on the net version, like steaming TV as it's becoming more for TV everyday.

NOTE: I haven't purchased a playboy mag since I was 19.

UFGators2007 02-20-2009 10:09 AM

The economy has certainly got to the magazine, but in my opinion, it falls back on the fact that they haven't adapted with the times. I am not saying that I can resolve their problems, but the magazine looks relatively the same now as what it did back when I got my first copy back in the 80s.

Art Room 02-20-2009 10:18 AM

They Layouts are not bad, its the image quality on some shoots that are terrible. Also seems like their ad count is down since the mag is full of way too much meaningless editorial and less photo spreads. So mags need to go back to basics and the less is more approach, as in less editorial and more photos and not try to over do everything.

Problem with that is then they loose their exposure and become even less relevant even faster. The whole magazine industry is predicated on sending out as may mags to as many stores as possible. Those stores are not on the hook for any product that is not sold and therefore have a great interest in keeping them on the shelves so long as they do move. The issue here that you pointed out is that they probably print many more magazine that they sell. Where as Rolling Stone for example does sell out at stores quite frequently as do magazines like Men's Health. Seems like mags with useful information do still sell where ones that either have the same basic content every month (maxim, fhm, etc.) or the ones where the information is easily accessible on the internet (porn). Not to say that I can't catch up on my music news on the internet for example, but it is often easier to just sit down and digest it all in one spot rather than having to go to 20 different sites to cover all the niches, etc.

Bottom line, Playboy needs to add more value to their magazines again as people are not going to buy it for the pictorials alone, as you can find them for free on the internet often before the mag hits the shelves. Further, the quality of the pictorials is not below even Maxim and therefore there is not incentive to "collect" the thing because chances are the pics are never going to be relevant like the ones they did in the past.

hopefully it will get better

Every print publication is going through a tough time. Look at your daily newspaper, advertisers are going in a different direction with their advertising dollars. Playboy was probably getting $6,000+ for a full page ad, now they would be lucky to get that on a back cover ad spot. When you got news, stocks, and even porn on your cell phone what the hell you want to pick up a magazine for.

Pretty sure they were getting much more than that for a fpa :2 cents:

Rico Shades 02-21-2009 04:27 PM

That's so fucking 6th grade I'm just learning how to use my hard on type porn. Actually it's not porn it's like flash. There's more action on youtube. When you are of age there is no reason to be glancing that....unless Alyssa Milano is flasing crack or something. Thanks Hef but when you finally do go, that one needs to follow you. It is a skin icon but it is time to be put out to the hall of fame in the remember when aisle.

Agent 488 02-21-2009 04:36 PM

do people even like that weird fake looking airbrushed stuff anymore?

its still fun to rub one out to playboy center fold. I have stuck many of pages together in my lifetime so if was not for heff I would have had to use national geographics jungle love to get my rocks off.:thumbsup

pornask 02-21-2009 05:03 PM

Time for it to vanish into obscurity. Nobody cares about plastic looking barbie dolls with fake boobs and undeveloped vaginas.

Heiko 02-21-2009 05:59 PM

I recently looked at a copy of Hustler magazine for the first time in probably ten years or more... definitely nothing in there worth $8.99 an issue.

boudoir 02-21-2009 08:51 PM

Hit the used book stores and pick it up cheap.

YellowDude 02-21-2009 08:53 PM

I saw in the newspapers that you can buy the company, stocks are way downnnnnnnn

NaughtyRob 02-21-2009 08:54 PM

Here is what they need to do... go Non-nude like Maxim. Then a Playboy can be laying on the table in every doctor's office.

I haven't looked inside a Playboy magazine in at least 10 years. The plastic filled glamour girls on the cover and inside the sheets are no different from what you can find on the web.

If Playboy brings back the natural beauty types that they had in the 60's, 70's and early 80's they'd be relevant again.

Playboy layouts should look like Met Art layouts.

Libertine 02-21-2009 11:59 PM

Playboy needs to save the brand, and split up its target demographics.

One printed edition should focus on younger men as a target audience. A mix of stylish/tasteful nudes and non-nudes, articles specific to the target demographic, a decent amount of non-nude celebs. Basically, a slightly more risqué and stylish version of Maxim/FHM.

Another printed edition should focus on Playboy's older, more sophisticated audience. Significant parts on literature, art, restaurants and politics, as well as tasteful and artistic (as opposed to stylish) nudes. A bit like a mix of The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and old-school Playboy, though a bit more sexual than the former two.

And finally, a pornographic branch, featuring high-class porn, but female/couples-friendly. Probably mainly web-based, targeting both men (with porn and articles) as well as women (with articles and porn). The image would be sexual enjoyment, the actual product porn. Would make for great up-sells in toys and lingerie.

Jakez 02-22-2009 12:34 AM

I've heard Playboy doesn't make their real money from magazine sales it's from casinos, investments, etc., sounds logical.

Playboy going non nude would be like the Ayatollah suddenly coming out and saying "hey, ham sandwiches really are okay guys!" It just isn't going to happen.

rayadp05 02-22-2009 01:51 AM

I liked Playboy when I was about 10 years old but now, it's fucking boring as hell to me. The girls are fake looking and they all look the same. Breast implants, shaved pussies, way too much makeup...etc.

DWB 02-22-2009 02:55 AM

You guys notice how thin AVN has become? Wow.
