WTF is GM thinking?

?G.M. will file what is expected to be the largest restructuring plan of its 100-year history on Tuesday.... and reduce its lineup of brands to just four, from eight, according to executives knowledgeable about its contents. The remaining core brands will be Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick.?

GMC, as far as I know, only makes trucks and suv's (I used to work at a dealership that carried GMC) and those trucks and suv's are identical to the ones chevrolet makes, save for the grille.

So why would they keep that brand along with chevrolet? They could cut back to 3 lines or keep one like Saturn. :helpme

DarkJedi 02-17-2009 11:04 AM

GM is shit.

They are losing sales to Hyundai LOL

Saturn sales peaked in 1994/95. Many analysts think the Saturn line has never made a profit.

So which lines are being cut with the most sales and what are the closest competitors?

Ok well then they could only keep 3 lines. Obviously the buick/oldsmobile/pontiac etc lines can be whittled down to one...since they were all basically the same anyways.

It makes no sense IMO to keep GMC and Chevy if the point is to slim down. They make identical products. :2 cents:

Whatever...

evildick 02-17-2009 11:50 AM

Why the hell would they keep Buick? I thought that one would have been on the chopping block for sure. Even Pontiac has some worthwhile vehicles with the G6 and G8, but Buick is just crap.

I can't even think of what cars Buick makes anymore other than that one ugly SUV that Tiger Woods was pimping for a few years.

GrouchyAdmin 02-17-2009 11:54 AM

So long as the Swedes take SAAB back, I don't give a shit.

LiveDose 02-17-2009 11:56 AM

A lot of their decisions up to this point have been poorly thought out. Why would you expect anything different now that they are under even more pressure...

MaDalton 02-17-2009 01:20 PM

right now they are killing their only moneymaker which is Opel in Germany. it's sad to see how amateurish a company of that size is handled

acctman 02-17-2009 01:25 PM

who buys american? american cars do not last long at all, always breaking down and needing repairs. its sad but true.

ADL Colin 02-17-2009 01:39 PM

I don't drive American cars myself but 25% of all cars purchased in the US are GM so people obviously do like the brands. They could definitely sell some of those off in order to shrink the company if they could renegotiate the labor contracts.

2007 top 3 GM brands by sales volume (for the record)
Chevrolet. 4.49 million sales
Opel/Vauxhall 1.69 million sales
GMC 619,000

ADL Colin 02-17-2009 01:43 PM

Lots of good data for US auto sales.

I guess you don't own my American SUV's. I only buy Chevy Tahoe or Suburban. That's it!

I just sold a 99 Suburban with 275,000 miles on it. I have it from 195,000 to 275,000. It was runnig just as good at 275,000 as when i got it at 195,000. I replaced it with a 2004 Suburban and LOVE IT!

I also have a 97 Tahoe that I have had since 99. It has 187,000 miles on it. I have replaced the water pump & power steering pump for them just wearing out. I put in a high performance transmission because the original started to slip (at 145,000 miles) - but that's more because i take it off road all the time. I have beat on that Tahoe more than any normal person would and it runs perfectly.

Until things change... I will always buy GM trucks & SUV's! But i have a house full of kids, so I need SUV's.

When my wife needed a new car (big enough for a baby seat but not a mini-van), we looked at an Impala (which is what she thought she wanted) and a Hyundai - and we went with the Hyundai, it was an easy choice :2 cents:

They've wanted to chop Pontiac for a long time, they tried back in the late 90s, I think it was.

Sly 02-17-2009 02:08 PM

Doesn't GMC have some more "heavy duty" vehicles then Chevrolet?

I know what you're saying. But I had to read it a few times to finally get it. :upsidedow

dyna mo 02-17-2009 02:13 PM

if they are made on the same assembly line, why not keep gmc going? not being a smartass here, just asking. truck buyers are a loyal group, perhaps by keeping the marque, they can keep customers. it doesn't seem like they would save cash by discontinuing gmc

AlexVoyeur 02-17-2009 02:14 PM

I like saturn. They bring european models into the us... Buick is not our cup of tea, but it sells good and gives old people something to drive...

crockett 02-17-2009 02:22 PM

GMC does a lot of heavy truck stuff that the Chevy brand doesn't.. Think dump trucks and so on..

DK 02-17-2009 02:36 PM

The New Camaro will bail them out

That's a stereotype left over from the 80's and early 90's. there's nothing wrong with the quality of american vehicles today.
