Home Cinema: Projector or Rear Projection Television?
Looking to setup an awesome home cinema and I was wondering what people would recommend.... a front Projector or a rear projection tv? and what brands/models etc...
We have a room where we can control the light, so that isn't a problem.... |
front projection onto a proper screen, not just the wall
get a projector with svga input and you can write it off to tax for "presentations", just remember to move it into your office when the taxman calls |
My brother who is also my business partner just setup a $30,000 fully customized and (Sound deadnd) room in his house. It got a Runco triple or quad layered CRT projector, it cost about US$12,000 and it KILLS ANY and EVERY LCD projector out there, if you can control the light in your room and want a REAL movie picture get a CRT if you can afford it. And a high quality screen also makes a big difference.
Honestly my bros soundroom/ theatre freaking ROCKS, it really is just like the movies and the blacks are really blacks, LCD's and other types of projectors CAN NOT DO BLACK. Ask a real exper thats what they will tell you. Anyways rear projection TV suck ass compared to a decent projector screen setup for size and quality of picture but it all depends on your budjet. Yeah, home cinema is definitely something I will be getting soon!
Great advice there bro, I'll bear the blacks thing in mind! |
If you want a better picture than LCD but not as expensive or hard to setup as CRT, then get a DLP projector. They are sweet, and you don't have to have an installer come out to set things up for you.

I have the rear screen projector, its the best to get because light does not effect the quality of the picture. On front projectors you have to dim the lights for a good picture.
Projectors are also better for wide screens, you loose NO quality. I suggest going with the 96" screen (if you have the room) - It will make all of your friends say DAAYYYUUUMMM!! :thumbsup The Dawg |
haha.. this is so weird.. i was JUST having this very conversation 2 minutes ago.
went to the home theater store this weekend and these projectors really run the gamut of prices.. you can get a projector for 4k or 18k.. and then the screen can either cost you either 500 bucks or 2k... after doing a lot of research i am totally unable to decide whether DLP is better than LCD or vice versa.. |
I spent about $100k on my home theatre. Projector onto a 120" screen, thx sound, big ass electric charis, etc.
A front projector is great, but you must have a VERY dark room and plenty of space. |
DLP is my personal pick. Very bright, great for Football sundays. You won't notice bad unless you have owned a CRT. Three chip DLP is best, but a single chip is way cheaper.
Nothing wrong with the sony LCD either. But there is this one LCD projector, called Piano I think, which gets great reviews for the cash. I have never owned. I am like one of those guys that argue about which is a better car, a lambrogini or an aston martin. |
Thanks for the feedback :thumbsup
going to look at projectors and screens tomorrow, with any luck we'll find something that will totally blow us away... |
