Keeping monkeys as pets... "Woman's life in Danger After Chimp Attack"

I don't usually post news stories, but I have seen a lot of threads on here about keeping monkeys & other exotic animals as pets so this struck a chord.
Why do people keep insisting on trying to keep wild animals as pets?
Maybe this is the real reason Michael Jackson had all that plastic surgery? Didn't he have a pet chimp??

(CNN) -- A woman has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a pet chimpanzee attacked her at a friend's home in Stamford, Connecticut, police said.

Charla Nash, 55, had just arrived at her friend Sandra Herold's house when the chimp, named Travis, jumped on her and began biting and mauling her, causing serious injuries to her face, neck and hands, according to Stamford Police Capt. Rich Conklin, who said the attack was unprovoked.

Herold had called Nash to her house to help get 14-year-old Travis back inside after he used a key to escape.
While her friend was being attacked, Herold tried to pull the primate off her, but was unsuccessful.

She then called 911 before stabbing the chimp with butcher knife and hitting him with a shovel. Neither fazed Travis, who police said was like a child to Herold.
Stamford police later shot the chimp multiple times after he attacked an officer inside a police cruiser, Conklin said.

Travis returned to the house, where police later found him dead. Conklin estimated that Travis weighed close to 200 pounds.
The police captain also said this isn't the first interaction his officers have had with Travis; the chimp escaped in 2003 and "wreaked havoc" on the streets of Stamford for a couple of hours.

In 2005, a different chimp escaped from California's Animal Haven Ranch and chewed off a man's nose and genitals.

People have to realize that removing these animals from the wild does not mean they are domesticated.

Yeah that story is even more disturbing with the news people showing clips of the chimp in old tv commercials, describing how it could "log in" to computers and drink from a wine glass.

One "friend" of the owner I saw a few moments ago said "after all these years of him being so nice.. for this to have happened something MUST have triggered it."

Amazing denial.

Its not so much denial as complete lack of understanding.

He could be right, something did set the chimp off, which is the point! He is a wild animal, no matter how much he is attached to his owner or how long he has been in a domestic situation we have no way of knowing what could "set him off"

John-ACWM 02-17-2009 09:47 AM

I don't know how to comment on that...some people are way too stupid to take care of themselves....not to talk about someone else

Tom_PM 02-17-2009 09:50 AM

Denial that it's an animal, lack of understanding that it's an animal.. however you slice it it's a slice of animal.

"he" "him" "nice"
"it" "it" "seemingly docile"

I am agreeing, it was like your friend was saying it was so nice and docile somehow the owner or the friend were responsible for the animal losing it.

listen.. i spank my monkey 4-6 times per day and i have never had any issues other than the occasional problem with getting my monkey to perform after many spankings..

using a knife or a baseball bat is really a last resort and shows that a woman has no business trying to own a monkey..

monkey's are for men and ladyboy's...

Yeah Michele, thats how she came off. Her friend that was on the news saying something must have triggered the episode, like making excuses for the chimp destroying a person. First of all humanizing it, second of all talking like such a thing COULD be explained away.. ugh. Just so far from the reality that a wild animal acted like one.

DarkJedi 02-17-2009 10:23 AM

"Chimp" is a code word for a black male, right?

Owning these exotic 'pets' is beyond selfish. Anyone with a brain knows the animals are miserable and pay the emotional expense so the idiot owners can think they are cool for owning it.

Lame.

This animal has very unique smell & sense of danger
Aftermarket have little voice, animal no hear aftermarket

Drake 02-17-2009 10:47 AM

Keeping a pet that's 200lbs and stronger than several men combined is asking for trouble.

I have zero respect for people keeping these kind as animals as pets.

Years ago I made a thread here questioning why a chimp (I believe) had to be at a webmaster show somewhere. People didn't understand why I was upset.

There are more morons on here having monkeys and other exotic animals as pets though

Llamas make good pets, they are a lot like dogs ... you just can't bring them up around only humans or they will think you are their equal & they will spit at you & jump.
They need to be around other llamas and they can't be weaned too early.
And they need to know that the humans are boss.

This llama though... he make too much touchy touchy with people at zoo & he think I am his sister who he can make rough house with. (I do bare a resemblance, I can not lie!)

This llama is not of Mexican heritage.
He is from Peru, his father was of Champion bloodlines. His Mother was an Appaloosa.
His coat shines like 18k white gold on the pinkie finger of a true NY Pimp in fedora hat & furs.

Look that up in your "Love Dictionary" Dr Ruth.

So this chimp was retired from doing TV and people don't think someone should have kept him as a pet? What does that mean? Should he go back to the wild, be shot, or...?

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. You see, my divorce was finalized yesterday and I am finally rid of that lump-of-lard- ex-wife of mine. "Martina" was the kind of woman who would steal money from my wallet and go drinking at the local tavern all night and come home smelling of booze, and have a few bruises from being in a fight, yes a real winner. Now that I have my freedom, I'd like to get my life back in order. I'm going down to the WalMart and get me a new suit, new pair of shoes, some fancy new cologne and a fresh haircut. The question is, will I meet a new woman anytime soon or am I doomed to be alone?
