I have seen plenty of racoons and skunks during the day , but i never did any rabies tests so its possible they had rabies

pocketkangaroo 02-16-2009 11:40 PM

It doesn't always mean they have rabies. Sometimes they are up during the day if they are sick from other things or really hungry/thirsty. But seeing them out during the day is a very strong symptom of rabies.

mynameisjim 02-17-2009 12:26 AM

I ride at a dirt bike track and there are two skunks that live in the side of one of the jumps. Maybe it's all the noise but they come and go all the time during the day. They don't seem rabid. I'd assume if they were rabid they would be attacking everyone or probably be dead. But they've been their for two years. I don't know about raccoons though.

A weird thing about rabies. It passes itself through saliva and the virus itself makes animals bite other animals. Weird how a virus can control your brain like that to make you perform a certain action to help itself spread. It's like if AIDS made you super crazy horny.

StaceyJo 02-17-2009 03:00 AM

LOL weird huh

PersianKitty 02-17-2009 03:07 AM

I've seen several in the daytime... usually in the late spring here when the mommas have babies in the den. They are crazy critters. I've had one growl at me almost like a dog. The males are huge.

I have a good-sized pond in my yard. For years, I kept koi in it. There'd be raccoons around alot in the summer. Heck one night..momma was out there with three babies chatting away trying to teach them to fish.

Finally got tired of feed the raccoons, otters and eagles the koi so now I buy about 50 small trout every Spring. Most of them are gone by late Fall.

Did you ever see Night of The Living Dead?

Zombies kill people by biting them, then the dead person turns into a zombie, and kills people by biting them. Pretty much the same thing as rabies.

Ding, Ding, Ding....we have a winner.

Most often when Raccoons are out in the daytime it is because there are babies in the den. Safer to leave them alone during daylight when their natural disposition is to sleep, and there are less preditors looking for dinner.

PK - Any eagle pics from the pond ?

How can these guys scare you

Vicious_B 02-17-2009 06:42 AM

Racoons don't scare me but I have seen some big ass possums! I had two one night scare the hell out of me when I tried to put the trash out. They were the size of medium dogs and I swear they hissed at me.

Whatever you do, don't fall asleep around them. You'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice with a thank you note where a kidney used to be.

One day there was a raccoon blocking the door to the gym. There was a crowd of people around the door, afraid to go inside, because supposedly, when they're seen in the daytime, watch out.

I grabbed a nearby traffic cone and went after it. That little fucker stood up on his hind legs and squared off with me. Then he came after me and I had to swat him with the traffic cone. Of course, the women started screaming and the other guys scattered while this crazy raccoon tried to maul me. Eventually I got a good hit on his ass, and he ran away.

Lesson learned on my part. Do not fuck with a raccoon in the daytime.

The only one I've ever seen in the daytime that was not rabid was sitting on a park bench drinking a 24 oz mountain dew in the Okefenokee swamp. The one I shot outside my house last year was very much rabid and was growling and lunging at everyone that came near him.
