Are you allowed to do this ???

If somebody has a website say http://mysite.com/xxxxx with the last "xxxxxx" being the exact name of a website that I own. The website comes up with keywords that I use on my site and the exact name of my site. All this site has on it is a whole page of google ads and nothing else. Are they allowed to do shit like this ?

VicD 02-15-2009 04:06 PM

I think you can do nothing about it...

If your site name is trademarked, then you can send lawyers... but there are many ways around it. And yes, it's what a number of scraper sites are doing these days.

No unfortunatly I have not trademarked the name, but thanks for the info I just looked up the word "scrapper" just to get some idea on what they are all about.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scraper_site

Ad networks such as Google AdSense claim to be constantly working to remove these sites from their programs, although there is an active polemic about this since these networks benefit directly from the clicks generated at these kind of sites. From the advertiser's point of view, the networks don't seem to be making enough effort to stop this problem.

cheers

By ® your name you have a case. We have a number of ® names and have had success in having sites remove our names in some cases with compensation. A ® only costs around $600 and is very simple to do provided you are willing to wait 6 months ?

fatfoo 02-15-2009 06:27 PM

I don't think google would like that.

Im wondering if they will turn a blind eye as they are also making money from these types of sites. I guess time will tell

HookUPcom 02-15-2009 07:28 PM

Yes, your right... ® - I contacted a lawyer about ® HookUP and he said that it couldn't be done, because it's too general. But I could have ® HookUP.com... But since no one could use it, it didn't really make that much sense. This point here would be one where it would make sense.

No. Google requires you to have content. Report them.

More a less sums it up.

Eventually, maybe, the 'G' will punish people in their algo. But I wouldn't be counting on it.

doridori 02-15-2009 11:27 PM

ah this is the classic cloning and click. very popular. you can make fast cash and then sell it off when you are done squeezing google adsense.

of course you need a solid scraper for this too. see sig.

sandman! 02-15-2009 11:33 PM

many people seem to do it.

doridori 02-15-2009 11:37 PM

not much you can do because google owns the internets.

you are in luck, i also provide anti-scraping solutions. see sig.

There might be issues if the name is trademarked and they just have the page keyed to the trademarked name to pimp it on contextual ad networks. Now if they say www.domain.com/ebaysucks That might fall under protected parody speech but there has to be content on that page.

Send a DMCA to google... They will remove the links.. http://www.google.com/dmca.html

halfpint 02-16-2009 10:57 AM

Well it looks like google has done something because the site no longer comes up when I did the exact search using the same keywords. I havent got any kind of reply back yet though.
