Bands that clearly have leaders and it is not the singer???

A friend and I were talking about many bands having an obvious "leader". I said it is pretty much always the singer. HE disagreed. So I named AC/DC, metallica, and pointed out some might say Van Halen but I personally think they are all anarchists and shouldn't count. Then I challenged him to name all the ones I forgot. He couldn't name anyone.

Do you know anymore?

Sly 02-14-2009 10:34 PM

YOU named Metallica for the singer being the leader? You are wrong. Lars runs that show. James doesn't seem the brightest to be honest... Lars created that band, Lars stole the name from a producer.

Sly 02-14-2009 10:34 PM

And how could you list Van Halen?

Allformyspace 02-14-2009 10:41 PM

A few of the past: The Sex Pistols and Kiss

Matt 26z 02-14-2009 10:42 PM

Oasis (although Noel does sing some), Papa Roach (guitarist), System of a Down (bassist).... That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

candyflip 02-14-2009 10:42 PM

I was about to say KISS.

There's a metamorphosis that happens when they become casino greeters.

I didn't know that about Boston but I love their music.

I thought they had some sort of homosexual, incestual two party voting system?

Is this a Canadian thing? We were only going with big bands. We decided Alice in Chains was too small to count. Since I don't know these people I'm gonna lump them in the same category.

badmunchkin 02-14-2009 11:36 PM

Motley Crue was always Nikki Sixx's band

ExtremeBank_Adam 02-14-2009 11:37 PM

Sixx A.M.

Jim_Gunn 02-14-2009 11:39 PM

There are lots of these situations in bands. Besides Journey I mentioned above, Rainbow was led by guitarist Richie Blackmore and guitarist Mick Jones was the founder of Foreigner.

PSSuperstars 02-15-2009 12:33 AM

Isn't Pete Wentz like the face for Fall Out Boy?

even though I don't consider them real rock, lol

tony286 02-15-2009 12:37 AM

INXS the chubby brother who played keyboards.

Garfield 02-15-2009 01:20 AM

Slayer, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Helloween, Anthrax, Judas Priest
is 6:20 am... can't think of any one else now

Google Paul Revere and the Raiders...there was music prior to MTV...

~Ray 02-15-2009 07:32 AM

Rising Force was Yngwie Malmsteen's band

HorseShit 02-15-2009 07:34 AM

i'm hungry

Fletch XXX 02-15-2009 07:37 AM

the leader of the band really shouldnt be the singer, that is just phenomenon that started with jim morrison antics on stage... old bands didnt act like the modern rock shit that people feel they need to act like jim morrison on stage to get written about in papers.

ive talked extensively of this in musicology and things ive theorized regarding music.

i listen to alot of music with no vocalist, such as surf: bands without singers are usually better imho

Fabien 02-15-2009 07:37 AM

AC-DC

Angus does

Fletch XXX 02-15-2009 07:40 AM

ummm Angus isnt the leader of the band, he is lead guitarist, but anyone who knows the structure of AC/DC knows, Malcom is the brains behind AC/DC and as rythm guitarist writes most of it all... angus is just lead guitarist, this is like saying Slash controls G N R when he was on stage, not the case at all. Lead guitarists do their thing but do not control the show...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Young

pre back in Black, Bon Scott controlled the show, angus just gets the hype now that Bon Scott is dead.

SilentKnight 02-15-2009 07:59 AM

Doobie Brothers.

Many lead singers (Tom Johnston, Michael MacDonald) have come and gone over the years - but Pat Simmons controls the band.

cykoe6 02-15-2009 08:48 AM

Jimmy Page was obviously the leader of Led Zeppelin.

escorpio 02-15-2009 08:51 AM

Surprised no one has mentioned The Who.

MaDalton 02-15-2009 08:51 AM

beach boys? queen?

being in a band myself and the music biz for over ten years i can say that in many bands the singer is not the leader. it just doesn't interest anyone outside the band. the singer is always the center of attention, no matter what the other band members want. no journalist will settle with the drummer when he can get the singer.

dyna mo 02-15-2009 08:55 AM

the ramones.
